There was a DNS issue for a while last night. It should be resolved now.

For the rest:
  • Browsing: Local and International. Good.
  • Torrents: Slow +- 10kB/s during day at the moment.
  • NZB: Int'l Still as slow as torrents. Local Faster, also depending on seeds.
  • D/L's. Depends - up to 100kB/s for non-continuous D/L's.
  • Mail. Fine.
  • Gtalk, IM, Skype. Fine now.
  • Audio streaming. Fine.
  • Video Streaming. Not so hot yet. Buffering still.
  • STEAM: Someone needs to check this again now for me.
  • SL, WoW and others. Let me know please.

Pings and Latency:
Local pings should be <50ms. I get 21ms on Spicy.

If there are any specific issues outside of this, please mail me and I'll see what we can do. The call centre lines are currently down, so mail support (at) digichilli (dot) com.

07h00 DigiChilli update December 28 2009

Apologies for the absence. We had to bring the network down twice this weekend to clear the effects of the un-broadcast block of 41.xx IP's on Thursday as well as some gremlins in the radius server.

We've implemented some changes that will help improve the network. We had to throttle torrents and other protocols to identify the issues and effects. We'll be working on improving these 'other' protocols today.

We're keeping the 20% discount in place for January 2010.

Anyone that feels that they haven't received enough benefit from our service this month is welcome to mail me directly in connection with a refund.

11h00 DigiChilli update December 22 2009

We still have an outstanding upstream issue. We're dropping a large % of international traffic when it hits London.

This is having huge backup and retransmit issues. It is being still being addressed.

11h00 DigiChilli update December 22 2009

Our help desk will not be working on 25th December and 1 January.

10h00 DigiChilli update December 21 2009

Their is a known issue with our upstream provider in London with high packet loss affecting international.

Issues between SAIX / MTNNS / IS are complicating things.

The shaper should be making browsing better across all packages.

Shaper in line with minimal shaping. Oxymoron I know.

But ask the techies. WTF.

6h00 DigiChlli update December 20 2009

We did two things yesterday.

1) Finally got the shaper in line even if it's not totally configured.

2) We used my hammer. Handed out temp bans to 50 of those guys that were consistently pulling more than 5 gigs/day. This represents <3% of users on the system. Its not the way we wanted to go but we have to also allow our rep to survive and others to use the system. These bans will be in place until we're happy to let them back on cos we know that they can't break or circumvent any of policies within the system.

8h30 DigiChilli update December 19 2009

Long night. There is still an issue with the shaper. Some related to Cisco and some to the QoS on the shaper. So, as it stands we've not implemented it as yet. I'm awaiting feedback from the engineers.

13h10 DigiChlli update December 18 2009

Hold on tite. This might hurt a little.

Network work underway.

14h30 DigiChlli update December 18 2009

Current situation. The Cisco doesn't want to play nice with the shaper. Our hammer involves rebooting it. We can't do that until a slightly quieter time as it will affect the whole network not just our segment. Techie is busy whispering and praying while we ready the hammer. Hammer time is 20:00 tonight.

DigiChilli update December 16 2009

Morning all. The Cisco guys didn't finish all we wanted but we're getting there.

Things looking better here. How're they out there?

Any auth problems: mail me directly so we can clean up please.
We're looking into the error 773 issue.

Latency issues? Any dns, or no site in sight. same

Slow torrents: Hang in there. They're better aren't they. Tomorrow should be much better.

Disconnects a thing of the past? Thanx Telkom.

Latest on DigiChilli Network Status update 12 December 2009

Our Network is 7 days old. There are still unresolved issues. The increased traffic of all the new users tipped something that wasn't apparent during testing. Upstream issues were identified and some have been resolved.

The network is not as stable as we would like yet. The issues that we had on Thursday and Friday of instability are better. We took the decision to 'shape' all traffic until we had proper stats of what was causing the initial problem so that users could use the system.

The logging and tracing has been running and we should have a better view of where the issue was originating now. Based on this analysis we can make an informed decision on how to fix it.

There are four major components to the network.
Telkom leg - Customer to DSLAM to IPC - Telkom interface
Radius - Our AAA Sever
Core to either local SAIX or International via Neotel and Seacom.
London Breakout and transit.

Managing 4 separate segments is complicated and not just an issue of logging a call with Telkom or IS. We also have to rely on three other parties to identify and rectify issues.

We are focussing on stability, speed and latency. Once the issues have been identified and fixed, torrents will be allowed. FTP will be allowed. MSN will be allowed. Gaming will be prioritised. P2P will be allowed, etc.

We have reached our initial limit of chilli clients that we could load on the network and will be putting a freeze on activating more clients for a day or so til we have more IP's and the issues remedied.

We are not about to change the existing 4 packages. The survey was to understand better what our customers want.

Thank you for all the support.

December 15 2009 Pap Auth issues

Some info on the disconnects and pap auth failures that some people are having. Some Telkom stuff is affecting people, most notably in Durbs area.

Here's a thread on some of the technicalities if you're interested. http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=186156

IP N/A:There is another known issue at this stage. The pool of IP's are spread across the 40 odd Telkom ESR's evenly. When those IP's run out, one will be pulled from the pool. This is really slow and causes some time outs and PAP auths. Please power down modem/router, have a coffee, and reconnect. This works in most instances. Patience is recommended until Telkom dump more IP's on their ESR's in the next few days.

Dialing the PPPoE from your PC corrects this for most people.

14:00 December 15 2009 Routing issue resolved

Anybody still unable to get to the DC site?

Should help with some latency issues.

Auth probs: are they better? 691 and 'remote no response'.

14:00 December 15 2009 Multiple connections

Too many connections problem - Ghost sessions. Clean up in progress.

We've found an IP error that we've fixed.

Let me know if it helps with the browsing 'latency' experience please.

12:30 pm 14 December 2009 - Speed and ports

We've also started some more tuning. We'll get to all the right ports that need to be open over today if possible.

12:30 pm 14 December 2009 - disconnects

These should be better now.

12:30 pm 14 December 2009 - Concurrent connections

Fine tuning here too.

Lots of tuning, tuning. Howzit my china. Get it?

16:30 pm 14 December 2009 - Connections
Telkom is having ESR and auth issues. They've dumped a HUGE number of new IP's on their network which is causing some havoc manifested mostly in long authorising times and timeouts as well as disconnects and PAP failures.

Hang in there. This too will pass. Hopefully soon soon.

19:45 pm 14 December 2009 - Shaping and ports.

We haven't finished the port shaping. Sorry guys.

And the DPI will be implemented tomorrow sometime too. :D

The lack of MSN is my biggest issue at the moment.

@Dave, you can also just edit the original post to add updates, just indicate the date/time of the update.

Is there anything specific you'd like us to test? I'm off to work soon, but can remote in and run whatever...

Still getting http disconnections and packet loss. Some issue with IM not working. SSH also disconnecting at times, causing some problems.

Are you shaping port 443 atm? I'm getting 12KBps max on it. (216.34.181.65 gave me a 383ms ping so it's not a routing prob methinks)

My home PC is on Telkom at the moment. Scared to connect and switch over to DC on the off chance that port 3389 has been crippled. Is the shaping only on the international leg? Don't want to remote in and then cunningly lock myself out ;)

2 Hourly disconnects still going:

Sun, 2009-12-13 20:40:02
Sun, 2009-12-13 22:40:09
Mon, 2009-12-14 00:40:16
Mon, 2009-12-14 02:40:23
Mon, 2009-12-14 04:40:30
Mon, 2009-12-14 06:40:37

I can browse slightly better, not much but there is a noticeable improvement. But saying that, for everything else it is pretty much dialup speeds but with more timing outs... So still being forced to use a WebAfrica account to function normally :p

morning all......

still can't open the DC hme page....

no GTalk

http downloading not good.....4hrs for 103MB's

browsing ok on some sites and a real pain on others

UPDATE:......GTalk working

downloaded a thing called Fire Tune for Fire Fox and seems to have made the browsing faster....

http downloading the same file as above still really slow.....

Hi Dave. I'm fine thx. Thank you for answering in the other thread.
Firstly it looks like I'm going to have a slow day today. If I can help please let me know.:)

Secondly if you want me to help, you need to help me connect. :D:p

I can't connect or stay connected. I have restarted my router several times and it seems I can connect for seconds or maybe a minute then I'm dropped again. I can't access my router software then. I'm using another account atm and have no probs there.

Cheers
:)

Edit: or is this related to waiting for more IP's?
