I have to connect 5 branches together using 256kbps Diginet.

1- What routers can I use? I see Cisco is the most popular, but they are very expensive. Any other router brands which will work with Diginet?

2- Can anyone give me the spec comparison between Cisco 8xx, 18xx and 24xx?

3- Can anyone guide me to a step by step guide on how to setup a VPN over diginet?

tx

i have contacted telkom, but i want to manage the diginet connections myself...so i need to know what other routers are compatible with Diginet technology.

How are you planning to architect the network? Are you going to connect into an mpls cloud or use a simpler point to point technology?

Contact telkom for a vpn solution if you want.

Alternatively, look at openVPN for a multi-site setup.

Diginet is a leased circuit, so no need for VPN, it is by nature a PN :)

What you need is a Cisco specific how to... start with details of the units you plan on deploying. The last time I did one, we used models 16xx for the smaller branches and 24xx for the bigger ones, but that was some time ago... um... like almost 10 years or so.

You can find plenty material in the form of PDF's in torrent form, otherwise try to find a faq / how to. Some good links here I think:

Really simple setup but what traffic are you gonna run over these links, voice, encryptione etc? Do you anticipate and expansion in the future, ie more sites and higher speed links?

3. No need for VPN as diginet is already a dedicated private end to end circuit.

How is your network setup here?
I am guessing you will have 4 sites coming back to one site, facilitating a point to point topology.
Cisco is your best bet as the new ISR range can do pretty much about everything and they are awesome but yes they are expensive.
Next best bet is HP Devices almost the same CLI as cisco and big price drop ie MSR20 (they have also taken over 3 com).
What are you talking about VPN's for? unless these diginets terminate at IS then yes you would need some site to site VPN's set up

If you want a small simple solution that works. Netgear ADSL routers can create VPN connections. You will need to setup dyndns acounts to point to as the ip's on most DSL ISP's (unless its uncapped ) is dynamic. The problem is you would still need an amount of knowledge on how a VPN operates. And Diginet lines is stable but really not what you want to use for a small business solution.

no one has ever been fired over using cisco equipment. Generally you want to look at the 1800 and 2800 series
also remember, you can rent all your CE routers from IS if you decide to use them as a mpls provider, which means you wont have to purchase a maintenance plan

If you are terminating at an ISP you need VPN and Firewall I use Cisco ASA5500 for the firewall and the VPN setup. Any router that support X25 interface will do and they are all expensive. There are better solutions using fibre or Wimax.

the connector would be either:
Db60 - 60 Pin D connector (cisco)
x.21 smart serial (cisco)
v.35 - 34 pins
x21 - 15 pins

Will be running VoIP on QoS, but also enterprise internet (with throttled audio and video streaming). Client goes into the cloud and connect to switch which will split the VoIP to VoIP Server and Data to a Radius Server

Yes, its actually multipoint to point setup. All branch connections must end up at the datacenter which then controls the link. routing internet and VoIP.

Thank you for your PoV. I just mention 5 branches as a pilot, but there actually is 183 branches. Also, ADSL will not cut it as I need something which will not fail and will guarantee the bandwidth. They are currently using ADSL, butlosing much productivity with downtime.

anyone knows the difference between these cables?

CAB-SS-X21MT
CAB-SS-X21FC
CAB-X21MT
CAB-X21FC

183 branches, and you don't know how to do 5? I would SERIOUSLY suggest you outsource this to an MPLS based VPN managed by the likes of IS / SAIX / take your pick.

What you are talking about, is not just a quick hack together to get it working.

Best of luck!
