Hi,

Need some advice on buying a Digital Camera. Camera would be used mainly for "normal" pictures. You know the family thing, holidays etc. But should give some access to "art" photo's....

I am looking at the Canon EOS 400D SLR camera bundle. It includes a Canon MP600 multifunction printer, Paintshop Pro and other items. It's going for R7999 at Incredible connection.

Know is it a good buy? I am not hell bent on the extras in the bundle. Would rather pay the same amount for a better or more versatile camera. For instance spend more on a additional lens. Nor do I have a specific preference towards a Canon.

But I am totally out of my depth and would like some advice from knowledgeable people please!!

Thanks

Well, I just bought the Sony A200 for R7499.00 with the 18-70mm lens. I like the camera very much.

Otherwise have a look at the Olympus E-510, it has live view and is going at some real good prices.

You can't go wrong with the Canon 400D though. I didn't buy it cause it was too small for me.

Otherwise if you don't need to have a digital SLR, maybe go for a normal digital camera.
I know the Canon A720 IS is VERY good, I have one.

Check out Makro

Canon 400D is available for 7499 @ makro. Includes a 2GB card as well. IMO its a very good buy. You cant buy just the camera and a lens for less than that.

I can swear I saw the same bundle for 6999 @ Makro when I looked last week !!!

Will check it out. But I heard that the lense shipped with the bundle is not that great. What lense would you recomend to support tthe undled one?

No Paintshop Pro, though.

IMO its not a bad lens at all but you might find some alternatives in this thread. http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=106158

You cant really go wrong with that bundle - you could even sell off the printer if you didnt need it.

Make sure you look at the 50mm f/1.8 - its cheap but a must have imo.

Any sugestions on a 70 - 300mm lens?

I've got a Sigma 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 DG macro I'm pretty fond of and a Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L which is also pretty nice. :)

The Sigma lens does not have AF?

Why should I not consider the Pentax K10D With Pentax DA 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 And Pentax FA-J 75-300 F4.5-5.8 Lens for R 9 929,00?

You'd have to ask a pentax user that. :)

Please don't turn this into a Canon .V. Pentax .V. whatever thread!! :)

Absolutely no reason to. If you like it, buy it, it's about as much camera as you can get for the money. The K10D is priced very low for it's class.

The only downside of Pentax is that their system as a whole is not as extensive as Canon or Nikon's, but I guestimate it's at least equal, but probably more extensive than any other manufacturer. Unless you're planning to set up a high-end studio or are brand conscious, this shouldn't matter to you. And on the upside, they've never changed the lens mount, so you can happily use ancient K-mount lenses (goes quite cheaply on eBay and second-hand stores, and there are *very* good old lenses) on it.

The bundle you mention is pretty good. the 18-55 is quite a nice lens, for the money at least (I paid £70). I bought it along with a K100D Super (the K10D's 6MP baby brother), and I must say I'm very impressed. So far the pictures I've taken with it is every bit as good as the ones from my Canon 40D with L lens. I posted some pictures before. Keep in mind these were my first DSLR shots.

Where is that deal, by the way?

Thats why I suggested soliciting the opinion of a Pentax owner. ;)

When buying a digital camera, price & Mega pixels is not the only criteria. IMHO you cannot go wrong with canon or nikon if you go digital SLR.
I decided many years ago to go Nikon SLR and moved on to DSLR. I still use my non-digital Sigma 100-400 zoom lens on my digital. Point is - Nikon had a policy of all their lenses being made interchangeable.

Agreed - bodies come and go but lenses should last a long time. iirc Canon has been using the same EF mount since the late 80s.
