Digital migration stalls pay-TV roll-out

When will our nanny government realise that business is a big boy and can look after itself. Well probably excepting the government controlled businesses, so I retract this post. :(

4,5-million people unable to afford a box “at any cost”

Are these the same 4.5mil who could not afford TV sets? Besides them liberating a large amount of sets , how did these poor 4.5 mil get the sets?

The cost of the set top boxes could be taken from the license fees paid by the 4.4M - It's the better thing to do. :D

You're all missing the bigger picture. There are more factors at play here than meets the eye. Just like with telecommunications, where government gave Telkom a monopoly to entrench their dominance before allowing any form of competition into the market - which has created billions Rand of profit for shareholders, so too is the opening-up of the Pay-TV market being deliberately stalled in order for the encumbent operators to further entrench themselves and continue to reap in exhorbitant profits for some time longer.

Money and power seems to be the only commodity worth anything in the new democracy that is South Africa. Keep in mind the provision to allow 'cabled' operators license to operate - of which Telkom is aiming to be a major player, and this will very nicely add to their revenue streams and increase DoC's shareholder gains.

History has a tendency to repeat itself where greed or incompetence is allowed free reign.

Someone's protecting their kick-backs . . . . .
