Digital Photos - where do u back them up?

With all the huge megapixel camera's around and HD video recording, the size of images and video's are massive.

I have gigs and gigs of family pics and videos and would hate to lose any. How do you back your pictures and video's up?

I have some on DVD discs but then I store them at home. A fire or theft or damage would result in losing quite a stash. Storing the DVD's at a family members place is not cool - don't want to hold them responsible for any of them.

I have a Skydrive with 107 GB of capacity that is already full (approx R500 pa).

HDD's are cheap but don't trust them to store data for long periods of time. And again...where to store.

What do you do? And what do you recommend?
 
Disc's eventually expire. Archive online and on multiple drives.

If we didn't move from analog to digital storage you'd still be facing the same problem, so nothing to do there.

Again looking at it from the analog to digital movement. Video tapes can fail, DVD's can fail, Hard Drives can fail. Not everything is 100%, it's a risk we all take.

Get 2 Hard Drives and have one backup the other. Look for a better cloud solution.
 
Just keep extra copies on hard drives. It's not like negatives weren't at risk and we never considered storing those in some off-site bunker.
 
If I took a photo in the last couple of years it's in here somewhere....

Store it online, somewhere like dropbox. Yesterday, I saw a house engulfed in flames and the people there lost everything. Freak accidents happen and your hard drives and extra copies are not safe in a fire.
 
Dropbox / Box / Skydrive / Google Drive / A Drive / Photobucket / Minus.com are all 'cloud' storage sites that I use for non-sensitive docs & photos. There's probably many more, and perhaps others can recommend some other cloud sites?
 
Mega (mega.co.nz) is also an option. 50GB of space free

For me it's not really practical - just over the past weekend I took 148gb of images - that's 16,003 photos. :o
 
I've been using Copy.com instead of Dropbox as it supports the use of Aliases on my Mac, and presumably the same with shortcuts on Windows.

This means that my Cloud folder is a duplicate online copy of my real folder, and not one and the same so if I accidentally do something stupid like delete it I'll have a bit of time to fix it before the replication happens.

It was a wake up call for me. I've got images stored on my old laptop and old phones as well. Possessions can be replaced, memories can't.
 
148gb is a lot of footage.

If it wasn't that much, I'd say an online solution. I'm using an Azure VM. Pay as you go option.

Isn't Mega the successor to the ill fated megaupload site that got taken down and as a result everyone lost all their data?
 
I have a copy of all of my photos (and music) on an internal hard HDD in my main rig at home and then I have backup copy on an external HDD which I carry with me wherever I go.

Which is why I wish a JBOD enclosure would be affordable. I have 4 drives not enclosed and just use a USB-SATA connection to access them when I need old stuff. I also have a (yuck!) Windozer with three drives inside the chassis, also just to have access to the data.

I wonder how difficult it would be to build a JBOD using an old PC chassis.

camera's video's DVD's disc's - jeez peeps, drop the apostrophes.
