Digital TV in SA may be delayed

I understand that they are going to use proprietry technology in the broadcast which will mean that even if you get a TV with digital input you will still need the set top box. Thats bad news for people that want to get a digital receiver for their mythtv boxes. Can anyones say anti-competitive?

What is the purpose of digital TV anyway?
The purpose, AFAIU is to have better quality at the high end, to be able to downgrade the quality (e.g. for infomercials) to fit in more channels into the same spectrum.
Up to 8 digital channels can be squeezed into the space of an analog one. This opens up opportunities for regionalised services and independent TV channels, community stations, etc.

As of the 30th of October the company had only been able to achieve 33% of national coverage due to delays in the finalisation of a frequency plan and DTT migration regulations.
Ummmm, excuse me for not keeping up, but exactly what does Sentech's having achieved coverage of 33% mean?

  • One third of South Africans can now receive DTT?

  • Or perhaps Sentech have put in antennnas and wires which, if switched on could, broadcast to one third of South Africans.

  • All South Africans can receive one third of DTT, i.e., DTT - Television
