So the govenment expects everyone to cough up R700 next year for decoders so that we can receive higher quality television. Kinda mad nuts when you think about it. R700 is a lot of money for most people. what are your thoughts regarding the matter? We did a short write up regarding the whole thing here...

anybody have more info?

i think thats the idea. but whether or not its compulsory to own a decoder is my concern. govenment might try to force us. because i imagine that they will loose tons of viewers if they don't.

Nobody will be forced - what will happen is that you will have no TV reception eventually but must still pay a license fee as you own a TV.

I'm interested to know how they will justify charging a TV license fee to people who do not own TVs with digital tuners.

You mean the same way they are taxing LCD Monitors as TV's because there is a possibility it could be used as one? You are forgetting this is SA they don't need a reason they just do it.

Just a higher quality image .. SABC content is notoriously crap and cannot be described as 'quality' in any way.
I for one will not be getting this.

so do u still need to pay a tv licence if u only watching dstv/toptv and do not get this decoder??
granted you will still get sabc via toptv/dstv, but then they already pay for the tv licence right??

Fair enough... however they will be adding FTA channels and ETV and DSTV will also have channels available on the box

Yes.
If the device has a TV tuner you need a licence (even a PC TV card).

I wonder, could you force them to stop the TV license as its unsolicited channels that are bundled with a decoder that you purchased from someone else. CPA I mean.

I understand that ... but now with it being broadcast on digital only ... then the tv tuner is not capable of allowing you to watch tv on its own ... so, surely this would change to now have the decoder be the point at which you would need to pay .. that way they can operate it like the pay tv and get the sabc tv licence paid or your decoder will not work!!
a much better option than asking people to "do the right thing" .. this way people can opt out of paying and then not get the content!!
