I live in an old apartment and two of the ceiling light setting are dimmers, with two and three light sockets.

I purchased 14W (=75W) non-dimmable energy-savers, because they were on special, believe that while they are not dimmable, they would still work when the dial is turned all the way up. Well, they don't. They cause the light switch to emit a loud buzzing noise which is echoed by the fuse box.

I have replaced the 14W ones with dimmer and weaker 11W ones (also 'non-dimmable') which as lessened the buzz considerably. On most days, it does not buzz at all...And I noticed a faint buzz when I still had the incandescent ones in there...

What I want to know is, why these energy savers do not work in dimmable settings and if I should be worried about this buzzing sound at all...

Thanks

:)

Brightness and availability

From what I have read, they are not generally available as sucuh - they suffer from being not quite bright enough, and pricey...

hello hj2k_x,

the downlighters that you can get from your local hardware store is definately not bright enough! i bought some to compare to ours and they suck.

as far as the availability goes. trying to get any of the lighting shops to stock them is a mission! the first thing they ask is what the price is. then they say they will never be able to sell them.

the price. yes they are expensive compared to the normal stuff.
but take into consideration that they last so much longer and they use a lot less electricity than the 50 watt downlighters, you will have a positive outcome in the medium to long term.

this goes for any of the lights available from c2r. the payback duration is variable for different types of lights because it depends from what type of normal (old) light to what type of LED light you change over.

regards,
monty.

Henry, I just bought an LED light from MontyPython - I replaced the 15W CFL I had in my room with a 12W LED and it's much brighter. Monty has dimmable ones too.

They aint cheap tho.

Do you know how much they are? I have just shoved in non-dimmables for now and they are working fine. They just flicker if you dim them - which I never do :)

Hey Monty , do those LED downlighters last longer than the conventional 50w 12v , and the 50w 240 volt ?

I have a total of 46 downlighters throughout my house , and the problem is , is that I have to replace 1 or 2 everyweek . Its more of a pain in the ar#$

Much, much longer. 50 000 hours is the figure I think. Monty can confirm this.
