Dire skills gap

HOT ON THE HEELS of the release of a list of South Africa's critical skills shortages - showing the country needs around 35 000 information and communications technology (ICT) professionals - the CEO of a local software applications company has echoed a warning that the situation is indeed dire.

Vote business for president.

Dude... the challenge to hold on to the skills has to come straight form the head of the government.

Why do you think that everybody wants to immigrate to Ausssyland.. The government there has made it clear that they are determined to attract certain skills, they have CREATED the right socioeconomic atmosphere and let whole world know about it.

On the other hand SA government is hiding behind crime stats moratoriums, legacy of previous regimes and rest of the lame rhetoric. Why would I want to LIVE and PAY TAX here stranded and bombarded by governance incompetence and life threatening socioeconomic mess. Why care to stay and be subjected to AA/BEE prejudice?

I cringe on sight of our president holding hands with "the tyrant", exercising the "quite diplomacy" whilst the most atrocious human rights violations are happening right in front of his presidential nose.

SHOW US THE CHANGE!!!

It is strange then how they are still pushing whites out of the economy. I have been told once already that I am white, so I cannot get the job. The manager was almost crying, because he was so frustrated that he looses his chance to get me on his team. Aus here I come!

The government needs to phase out this AA/BEE ***. The idea was fine in the beginning, but I think 12 years on it needs to be reviewed especially since its now having an obviously negative impact on our economy.

Skills shortage is the direct result of emigration and AA/BEE. Its that simple. Pretty much everyone I know is moving. The only reason I'm still here is because I have a small company and its my baby. If things go pearshaped for whatever reason, I too will be gone.

Until government readdress their affirmative action and BEE policy, this will continue to happen.

I know of at least 15 people in this sector, including myself, who are planning on immigrating by the end of this year.

The mass exodus has begun

I can't understand why the newspapers don't bring this up as often as it should be. I guess all the top editors are where they are cos of AA/BEE so they can't complain? I might be wrong here - I'm just guessing. Don't shoot me.

If the issue was made visible more often in the media then people would certainly realise there is a problem. I give up with this place. Its a great place but the handful of W**K*RS at the top are ruining Africas proudest economy.

I am actually very happy. If it was not for BBBEE, I would never have considered Australia. That means I would never have experinced REAL broadband. Now I will move on to the first world. Can't wait!

I get it now, it all makes sense.

BEE and AA are tools used to Promote Equality By Prejudice And Discrimination!

They should of just called it PEBPAD!!!

You have the skills, wat are u waiting for?, Aus wants you, UK wants you, Canada wants you!!!!!, if theres a total 1000 000 IT jobs in this country im sure by now whites only have a 10% share in that and still they shout Racism because theres too many black techies out there not satisfied that you have the job!, Save your cash and take your skills, maybe just maybe theres hope for your future here but there sure as hell isnt any hope for your children. BEE / AA will still be here even when there isnt a single white person living here.

Who's waiting? We are all leaving. It is great. No school or medical fees. Free varsity. I will save R3mil just there.

So why dont I see any jobs being advertized. If its such a problem the media and websites should be full of ads for jobs.

For some reason this article reminds me of the people on the forums here calling people who leave traitors, and the the governments comment "if you dont like it here then just leave"

Well, the people left, now what are you going to do?

But this is just the IT sector, the real problem comes with contruction companies leaving (eskoms fault) and the civil, mechanical engineers, doctors, investors etc. also making a break. There is a reason why the rest of the world wants those skills so badly, yet SA's governments attitude is "if you dont like it, leave" to them?

yeah, SA deserves this skill shortage.

For the guys that stick around, at least you know you can start to demand more for the skills you have. Might make it worth it to stay, at least for a little bit longer.

Yep, I agree. being a BSC(Hons) graduate, I feel that my opportunities here are not much. BEE/AA and all the other short but powerful abbreviations have a couple of impacts first and foremost the direct impacts on the economy and "brain drain" as mentioned, but then for the sorry few (including me) who are left, it has more implications, when you go for an interview you get stuff like, "hmm pale male" not much opportunities, "you must take what you get..." So we settle for bellow par jobs and salaries because you are white and must take what we get. On the other side of the coin, I am sure BEE/AA candidates are also suffering under this policy, they are told that this is a very competitive field and that you are lucky to get the job because of BEE/AA? I don't think that is right and i feel that, that is unfair towards the AA candidate and the non-AA candidate!

I have read countless articles saying ITC skills storage, but has my pay since increased? don't think so, supply and demand?!? If there is such a big shortage, we are a commodity and a commodity has to be protected I am also searching for greener pastures over seas, the pay difference including inflation and exchange rates are big enough for me to become a so called "Ex-pat". What deems some occupation say an engineer to earn more money than say a programmer, who decides this? Because in most instances two people can do exactly the same job but because the one is titled something else he gets more money...

All in all we as ICT professionals have 2 options as it stands now, either get a one way ticket to pasture le green, or start our own companies! because as you read in the article contract work is more expensive then having employees, I wonder why....

End of rant!! lol please excuse me now i need to get back to work!!! ;)

Am I the only white male in the IT industry who hasn't had a problem with BEE?

I also think that the answer lies not in excluding a certain racegroup from an industry, but by promoting IT as a viable career choice to previously disadvantaged groups at a school level. As these people come through the system they will start filling more roles and there will be greater representation of all races and genders. A good way to do this is for the industry to start advertising to scholoars in grade 11 targeting intelligent, suitable candidates.

the company i work through (self employed but work through another company) has an urgent need of decent programmers. you think we can find any. no. don't talk to me about BEE/AA most of the black people out there realise that BEE/AA pretty much assures them a job and as such they couldn't give a flying fig whether they qualified or not. apply for job. if i don't get the job and a whitey does, take the company to court for discrimination. end of story.

stuff that. and as to why there aren't more jobs advertised, its because if you don't put the advert out you don't need to read the 500 000 cv's that come in, you ask your mates/colleagues if they know someone and do it that way. that way you can hire someone who is qualified based on their skills not their race.

Two causes, "Affirmative Action" (AA) and another. Apart from AA companies should stop moaning about there not being enough qualified people and hire "junior" or otherwise inexperienced or unqualified people and train them, it makes jobs and increases the number of qualified people out there. Also these people they train would have a great sense of loyalty to the company then anyone else they might hire.

Yet instead of doing this they just b**** and moan like a baby without it's chocolate.

I totally disagree Browser. One of my major clients does that, hires matrics that cant afford varisty and provides training and gets them certs etc. as soon as these guys have their piece of paper they start looking for a better AA position. they sit in any job for 6-12 months then look for something better.

just because you offer the guy a break doesnt mean he or she will be loyal to your company.

just take a look at university/college registration figures. almost nobody is doing programming or accounting etc. they all doing management courses. the majority of the ppl coming out of varsity feel it is beneath them to start in a junior position.

that is what AA/BEE has left us with. a highly underskilled workforce that jumps ship just before their employer finds out they are useless

This is a common misconception. You don't get a bigger slice of the cake because there are less eaters, the cake shrinks. Some businesses simply are not viable without a certain number and quality of skills. The shop closes and 10-20 jobs disappear.

If you are of the entrepreneurial persuasion you may move to fill the gap. That certainly is an option, but it only favors certain personality types. Sucks to be you if your not the "can do" "go getter" and all that silly crap type.
