Hello

I've recently moved to CT and I usually take the train but sometimes i'd like to take the car. Can someone advice which is the least busy route to get from Rondebosch East to Pinelands?

Yesterday I took Jan Smuts Drive then got onto the N2, that was quite busy.

Today I took the M5 (Kromboom Parkway) then got onto M18 (Klipfontein road), that was a little busy but quicker I'm not sure if it's because I left later (7:55 as opposed to 7:35 the previous day).

There area few other routes available as well looking at Google maps and my GPS. I know I can just keep trying different routes at different times to find the best but if someone has already gone through the exercise that would help.

Thanks.

Wouldn't it be faster to stay on Jan Smuts all the way to pinelands? ie get into Pinelands via end of Forest Dr. instead of the beginning, then use the back roads.

Rondebosch East to Pinelands, should be rather simple.

Approach for the East side of Pinelands.
Kromboom Road to Jan Smuts, turn left onto Jan Smuts.
Go all the way over the N2 till you get to the 1st set of traffic lights (Forest Drive, just before Old Mutual) and you're there.
Turning left into Forest Drive takes you throughout Pinelands.

Approach for the West
Kromboom Road over the M5 till the T-Junction Traffic lights (Milner Road)
Turn right and take Milner all the way, over Klipfontein Road, keep left avoiding going onto the M5.
Turn right at the traffic light, going through the undercarriage (which is the M5) onto Raapenberg Rd which becomes Forest Drive.

Can't think of any other way to get in there.
What time do you leave home?

Rondebosch near Kromboom road.
Pinelands near Vincent Palotti Hospital.

I will leave home at around 8am.

You're gonna get the bulk of traffic either way.
I'd suggest my approach from the West then.

Thanks! I think i'll use the train 80% of the time, there's no where to go out to in this area even if you have a car anyway.

No I meant there's no need to bring my car to work since there's no where to go in Pinelands during work hours (i'm used to disappearing at work :P) so I might as well use the train to come to work.

I might be going to Gauteng that weekend but if not then i'll come by.

haha oh yes theres no use driving and its way cheaper with train

cool ....

Oh and just a question about the train, what's the difference between 1st class and 3rd class besides the cost ofcourse. I buy 1st class tickets but just jump into whichever carriage, are there carriages reserved for 1st class and how do you identify them?

Don't want to ask at the station incase someone notices that i'm new and targets me :P

haha you can ask the decent looking people

i know 1st 3 carriages are first class ...and the rest 3rd class

but if you fine in 3rd class and make few friends there then its cool ...its just more dangerous when its quiet and you travel peak times so its fine

As samr1wp says - during peak times you're not really going to have any issues.

But first class is always at the head or lead part of the train.

I travelled along that line a couple of days this year from Ottery to Maitland, 3rd class.
And on one or two of those days it was non-peak times.
I just wanted to get where I was going and back and found seating, no issues to mention.

I'd actually like it if I could travel train more often - always weird/funny stuff happening :D
Reading various friend's "MetroFail Diaries" in FB is a treat :p

Your commute on the train is like what? 5 mins? :p

My ride is 10 Minutes!

So far I haven't been able to sit but i suppose I leave at peak times. It's not too bad but there are the days where you wish you had carried deodorant with you (which I now do). The only thing i'm worried about is my laptop during my walk home from the station, albeit a 5min walk.

I'll try the front carriages tomorrow. 1st class monthly return ticket is R168 and 3rd class is R90.

yeah the laptop should be insured tho ?

but not nice if it does get stolen ...is there people that perhaps walk your route

and yes you go during peaks and since there are few stations before you ...you have to stand

and as for deodorant ....haha ....try 1st class maybe ....

i take a 655 train and its a slow one but always get a seat ..if i take the 705 one im standing all the way so sometimes depends on times

but takes me 40mins to town from belville so have to take that

Surely if he's in Rondebosch going to Pinelands he'd have to go from Rondebosch -> Salt River, then Salt River -> Pinelands?

And in regards to Metro Plus (first class) vs Metro (third class) there's not much different except during peak hours. I travel third class and it's always packed during peak hours. If it's quiet I've ridden first class only because the rest of the train was empty.

1st class has nice soft seats! Oh in the morning it be easier to go uo kromboom towards red cross
Dip under the n2 and up forrest drive. First robot left and u at pallotti!

Don't carry it in a laptop bag for starters, put it in a backpack you keep strapped to your back.
