Directions in CT - Help

I take lansdowne-crawford-athlone-hazendal-pinelands. It's a 10 minute ride, usually take the 07:35 to be at work by 08:00.

Tomorrow i'm going to get into the front most carriage to see the difference.

I always see guys stealing rides by riding inbetween the carriages, the adrenalin junkie in me wants to try it but i'm not brave/stupid enough :P

Surely if he's in Rondebosch going to Pinelands he'd have to go from Rondebosch -> Salt River, then Salt River -> Pinelands?

And in regards to Metro Plus (first class) vs Metro (third class) there's not much different except during peak hours. I travel third class and it's always packed during peak hours. If it's quiet I've ridden first class only because the rest of the train was empty.

Nope - if he gets on at Crawford, Cape Flats Line, it passes on directly to Pinelands.

Remember, he's in Rondebosch East, not Rondebosch.

Hang on, not so fast!

The carriages on the end pointing toward the CBD is First Class (Metro Plus). In other words in the morning you take the front most carriages and in the afternoon the rearmost.

Remember trains don not turn around, the driver just gets out the one end and into the other and "reverses" lol...hope I make sense :)

Mind your tongue fella, the lady that make that malva pudding you so enjoyed, has a shop in that side of the world (N'dabeni).

N'dabeni is factory world :p
The retirement homes are south of that :D

Mmmmm malva pudding....

somebody said malva pudding

Shake&bake you now have a duty of prodviding malva pudding for the meet :p

ah ok, I get you. i've never used trains in SA before this.

I get the reversing part but don't they also switch the tracks? i.e switch tracks then reverse since the trains going to CT are always on the same track ,right

eish. don't the carriages have anything on the outside indicating that they are 1st class?

Huh?

I don't know how Pineland's station looks, but first class ALWAYS points to town, except for trains going from Bellville to CT via the Lavis route

I think what samr1wp is getting at is the following:

At CPT station, when you approach the trains head-on - the first 3 carriages are 1st class.
Which boils down to the same thing...

The trains are never turned around.

1st class will always be at the section of the train "closest or in the direction of" CPT Central Station.`

They switch track in town, just before woodstock station, and again when they get to their end station. This is on days when trains are running smoothly (not when a train is broken on the track or when cables were vandalised - in those cases they use the traffic signals hanging overhead to indicate when they must change and if they should wait for a train coming from the opposite side to switch)

ok yeah lol forgot its from pinelands and not town ....but will be the same for him both routes 1st class will be the ones at the front in direction of travel

"first class ALWAYS points to town" does 3rd class go another direction :p

dont know about lavis route

Well from Lansdowne to pinelands 1st class will be at the front since Pinelands is on the way to CT.

From Lansdowne to Pinelands, 1st class will be at the back since you're moving away from CT.

Right?

also for example, will the trains from Pinelands to Lansdowne at any time of the day be on the same track? Just in case i leave work earlier/later I don't want to end up going in the opposite direction.

Right.

And doesn't Pinelands just have the two tracks? One going to town and the one coming back?
Generally they should just be making use of the one side of the tracks, unless there's been an incident where the other set of lines have to be used.

There's a trick that you can use should you for some arb reason not know whether the train is going or coming from town.

If the number of the train ends in an ODD number it means the train is coming from town. Likewise if it ends in an even number then its going to town.

And the trains on your line will ALWAYS start with 05.

So for example train number 0501 is the first train coming from town on your line for that day. Train number 0514 is the 8th train going to town on that line (the first would be 0500)

Geddit?

Hopefully u don't have that targus backback. Might as well paint a bullseye on your back
