Hi guys

I'm hoping someone could perhaps help me with this problem I have been having or point at what to do/what the problem may be.

Line - 4MB line through Telkom
Package - 8mb package Mweb

I randomly disconnect at various times during the day - the SNR margin drops to 3 or 0.1 and I can't connect or goes super slow till the problem rectifies itself (which is usually in 5-20minutes). During this time it might reconnect at a lower speed if the line drops till I reset my modem. Resetting does not help during this problem either, the SNR margin and download/upload speeds all go bad once the SNR starts going.

What I've done so far:

-Called Telkom 4 times. First time 2 guys came to phone a number on my phone then left. They claimed it was fixed and wasn't. Called 2 more times, just get sms's that it was fixed, it was not.

-4th time a technician calls me and tells me it is likely my distance from the exchange. He said he will lower the line speed to match what I have (It is currently 5117kps, it should probably be at 4096kps like it used to be). He did not do this anyway.

This problem started occurring 24th March this year after there was a reported fault in the area and has been happening ever since then. I did not believe the distance story from this Technician; house I am staying at was built 4 years ago and the line/internet has been working fine, more or less, for the last 3.5 years. So unless I was moved to a different exchange (Unlikely, I live in Hermanus) then that was a bad excuse.

I have tested with another router/cables and the same results happen when testing on the backup one, it will eventually disconnect and the SNR goes bad. Something I did notice however - the moment I plug in the other router the stats seem to return to normal and even if I switch back to the other router the stats are normal again on it as well. Is it possible the problem may be in the jack itself? If the stats all return to normal immediately simply plugging another router in (it doesn't return to normal if I unplug/plug the same router in though) then what does that indicate? Perhaps the refresh of the Mweb account from 2 different routers fix it? If thats the case is the problem perhaps Mwebs side?

I have removed the phone/splitter ect while testing as well, same results on both routers. I just don't think its the equipment at all at this point. I am aware that having a different package than the line speed can cause issues, but I changed that a long time ago and was working fine for years and even when it reconnects at a worse speed it still disconnects anyway eventually.

I don't know what to do anymore or where this problem may lie. It can't be with the my equipment as I've tested 2 routers, different cables and with/without phone. Any ideas? My next call I will likely ask them to lower the 5117kps back to 4mb but other than that I don't know. I feel like they don't want to replace cables or even look at the jack at my house?

Sorry for the wall of text, felt it best to explain everything I've done and noticed so far. Hopefully someone has an idea here.

Could be a bad/wet copper joint or frayed peice of cabling anywhere from your house to the exchange.

Send TelkomZA a pm here. They are excellent - helped me sort out my disconnects by running new copper from my house to the exchange and testing the cabling throughout.
