disconnections

unbelievable, is it possible to packet sniff your internal network so you can see whats goign on at a lower level?

I have not packet sniffed. (what util would you use?)

What I have is a Belkin Wireless G Router F5D7231-4 Firmware 4.05.03 connected to my UTD iBurst modem.

I have eliminated my other 3 PCs ie completely switched off.

I currenly only have my Acer Travelmate 8000 laptop connected via wireless. So I wrote this simple Java app to monitor the router so that I can keep a log of what is happening to send to my SP.

So I leave that running whilst surfing. Problem does seem to get worse when running https:

The strange thing is that this only started happening in the last week or so. I would love to have this problem resolved as it is unusable as is.

I am prepared to dig down into lower levels. Do you know of what software I can use to network snif my internal LAN (I would not really like to write my own stuff talking via winicap), I guess it would have to be the wireless lan?

is your iburst modem reseting itself ie 5 led then no led ....

when this happens?

If so you may need to buy / make an arial to boost your signal.

If not then not. worth a try.

I constantly have 5 leds on... The signal does not seem to be the problem. I have line of sight connection to the BS in CT.

I had it running for 1 month with no glitch. Weird. Maybe as Slimothy mentioned perhaps there is something happening at a lower level???

I suspect that it is either a faulty router or the Base station or perhaps I have 2 BS and my modem is thrashing as to which BS to connect 2??? Need 2 know more about this stuff.

Thx 4 advice though!

I had a good run yesterday, after fixing the PC that manages the iBurst connections I no longer have disconnections. Downloaded close on 500 Mbyte yesterday on p2p which is now working for me

I've heard speculation that frequent disconnects, even when you have good signal, is due to the iburst modem switching between two towers the whole time. This especially happens if you have almost equal strength signals from more than one tower. Try directing your modem to only one, and see if it helps...

If this is true then the intellicell technology is not working. If it switches you, it should do it seemlessly.

I still suspect that basestations have not been configured identically. Thus two adjoining basestations may be using different MTU's... and that switching from one to the other may cause disconnections, depending on your hardware profile.

It might be an idea to find out your MTU during these disconnects and see whether you get consistent or varying MTU's.

Before the Randburg BS came into being, I did have more disconnects, and I believe that was because I was being switched onto a BS (Possibly Northcliff or Bryanston) with a different MTU configuration. Now Sandton and Randburg both have MTU of 1432 (when I last checked!), so I very seldom get disconnected.

DISCLAIMER: This is just a theory, of course... but you should certainly be able to switch BS without a disconnection.

Apparently the disconnect issues (in CT anyway) have to do with a fault in the latest (transparent & automatic) firmware upgrade. The manufacturer is working on resolving it....

Marengo my experience is identical to yours. I'm also in Cape Town and my connection was rock solid up till this month and now I get disconnected every few minutes. I'm directly beneath one base station (Goodwood) and out of range of any others (I think) so its not because of switching between bs's like jrgns suggested. And I haven't done any firmware upgrades or fiddling with settings or anything like that. Its definitely something they've done on their side about a week ago.

Same here I am right next to the Plumstead tower and get disconnected alot.... it seems that it may be getting better in recent days though.
