No, as Johan described it's a complete disconnect not a pretending-to-be-connected-but-not-shifting-data sort of disconnect. I am in my normal area, yes.

Would still love to know what causes the disconnects - is it a load problem with the radio network, the DNS servers? I connect using EDGE and sometimes need to reload my router to re establish the connection. Had a problem a few weeks ago where the router connected but couldn't obtain a DNS address.

Logged the call with Vodacom - now fixed. Wonder what was the root cause??

Anyway, EDGE is way better than 56kbps dialup!

This last spate of disconnects in Cape Town (and then Durban) was caused by loading that only showed as the number of active connections exceeded a certain level, not seen before.

As with most things nowadays, it was resolved by a software upgrade.

Well - I hate to be the bringer of bad news but I'm having another jolly evening of pretending-to-be-connected-but-not-shifting-data disconnects, so I would posit that all has not actually been sorted?

Well, my VM connection has been craaawling the last few days already. And its still craawling. My 3G broadband testing today at around lunchtime for this forum revealed very good results. It was strange, I was getting full speed on international speed tests but only half speed on local. Weird, now I am typing this on my VM connection as I am unable to connect on Vodacom. I tried about 7 times, keep getting "PPP link control protocol..." errors. Sigh...

Same here, was getting consistent 1.2Mb/s speeds all day, now the old symptoms are back. The guys are attending.

Is no-one else being disconnected every few minutes? It's driving me nuts!

must admit my connection has been stable UP UNTIL THE PAST WEEK!.
im beginning to think i made a bad choice going 3g and would have been better off using adsl.

wish the disconnects can stop already!

This problem has not been fully sorted yet, so it will probably recur at some time. While they're working on a permanent fix, they're monitoring it and are resetting the system when needed.

Be assured the guys are working around the clock to get a permanent fix in place.

Areas that can be affected are Cape Town, Durban and certain areas of Gauteng.

@v3g does this mean we all have to move to Bloem? lol

Remember, in Bloem, the network closes every evening at 6pm. And 1pm on the weekends! :)

Actually, there's quite a big user base in Bloem, and we never hear from them here on the forum, which is a nice feather for the radio guys out there.
