Discovery Bank

I made an immediate EFT payment yesterday immediately after creating the beneficiary. Had to use the app as the payment failed when trying on the web site.

Oddly, I received an sms saying " The EFT from account *** to account *** appears to be suspicious and has not been processed. For more info, call 0860112265" but the beneficiary still received the payment almost immediately.

I got exactly the same last week. I phoned them. This is what the Discovery call center agent told me. Load the person. Wait 3 hours and then try the app. Their system has different waiting times. For some you can make the payment after 3 hours and some up to 5 working days. No more immediate payments to new recipients online on the website. By the way, I was only able to make an immediate payment after 2 days.

No problem. I actually posted this earlier in the off topic section a few days ago when this started happening. Apparently there was an influx of illegal transfers from accounts and they had to stop it. Seems there are some sort of security-related problems on their systems from the sounds of it.

Also, since this was implemented, I can no longer log into the banking website without approving each login from my mobile device.

Same here, this is a good feature, now if only they can move away from OTPs to in app authentication.

Agreed. A shame it had to take a security problem and illegal transfers before they actually implemented it. This should have been done from the onset. Perhaps then it would not have been needed to implement the new restrictions on new immediate payments. Also, my US bank account has this feature linked to my device. No SMS's. All in-app authorizations when I do online banking on their website. In fact, they gave me the option of in-app authorization or 2FA with an app like Google Authenticator.

They put me on an exclusion list - I could do mine the next morning, after trying all afternoon.

No, they did not. New security measures. I could only have done mine in 2 days. The call center agent did tell me times will differ with every new recipient you load. Some will take 3 hours, some could take anywhere from 1-5 work days before you will be able to make an immediate payment.

They put me through to their fraud department, and I was cleared to do the payment the same night. I chose to do it the next day.

Been banking with Discovery but getting a CC this month…

Any tips in order to maximize rewards etc?

Also read a few comments on this thread where people mentioned to keep EFT’s and debit orders away from the CC - reasons behind this?

Pay as much as you can with the CC. EFT's and debit orders count for nothing. Card purchases gives points for the weekly goal, as well as counting toward your monthly spend to determine cash back percentage. And you earn miles on every card transaction.

Get the suite. Get to Diamond Vitality Money status if possible. If you're not on Vitality Health and you eat veggies, at least look at getting the R100 option to maximise rewards.

I have been on Platinum CC only with a monthly charge of R130 and forever on Silver Vitality Money Status. I only use the CC facility as I would not want to upset all the other legacy stuff I have with my current banker.
Are there real benefits of upgrading to the Suite (for R250)? My current DMiles earn is +/-R1500 a month.

I love this, platinum CC but still frugal enough to care about bank fees.

Debit order payments deducted from credit card accounts don’t qualify for the interest-free period. I assume that would also be the case for EFTs.

Optimum rewards are achieved when you have as many Discovery products as possible, savings level required for your card account colour, and spend at the retail partners:

Woolworths / PnP
Clicks / Dischem
Sportsmanswarehouse / Total Sports
BP/ Shell

They have limited like everyone.
For me, platinum CC only, I know for example that I only get rewarded on R1500 or less fuel spend at BP/Shell. After that I use my FNB Aspire.
Get fruit and veg from Woolie/PNP (pref. Woolies).
I don't have car insurance with them but it'd pay to move it I think. But Naked is dirt cheap and accepts payment by card.

Any spend that doesn't go via Visa is earnless so avoid it. I pay R3.5 or so per debit order.
