Discovery Bank

I opened a discovery black credit card like three weeks ago to get the apple watch since I'm on vitality and hitting my health goals consistently.

I've been getting technical errors when trying to activate the apple benefit which they are struggling to figure out why. For some reason all my current discount % on my account is 0% but I'm on vitality money gold.

I also mainly shop at Woolies but and nothing seems to show in my food basket (its linked) - anyone know how long does it usually take to update before I start querying about this.

Another major concern, is that my credit card payments seem to disappear after a few days which I queried as well. As in it drops off my transaction history and my remaining balance goes back up. These kind of issues scares me to be honest, I wouldn't move my main banking over.

Is there any benefits using the Discovery Bank zero monthly fee account vs say Tyme Bank?

Didn’t even know they had a free offering. I’ve been on the R5 account for a while.

No benefits really except for the fact that they are quick to assist of an issue from their call centre. NO TymeBank shenanigans.

But no add-ons unless you fully commit to Discovery and their lifestyle requirements

i need to move banks

with FNB im not getting value with teh ebucks anymore

i havnt followed rules and so on

what rewards does discovery offer and how easy is it to get rewards

anecdotally you need to buy into their ecosystem of vitality and car insurance but then your rewards are better. However it is getting worse next year as to get the full benefit you need to get life insurance and investments/pension i think. So if you not really putting in the work for FNB to try maximise the rewards i think the same applies to Discovery.

I signed up with the free account to see if I can benefit from converting my points to the Discovery Miles and I have noticed in the app the following:

Does that mean my points from vitality can't be converted? All these places with their points and moving goal posts or swipe a card to get the discount is driving me crazy.

No, this is a separate thing.
If you have vitality money between 60% and 100% of the exercise points needed to achieve your weekly goal are converted to miles.

All that the free account enables you to do is 1) receive miles for healthyfood etc purchases instead of rands, 2) receive your gameboard rewards in your bank miles account, and 3) use vitality travel.

All I can say it Discovery is THE most complicated system of rewards. You stars must really align and you need an accountant degree to understand the way things work. I spend a good 1 hour reading what a vitality game board is and what is does and how it works I still have no clue.

Are your balances for transaction and credit accounts reflecting as zero in the app at the moment?

Shows a 32-day notice account giving 7.25% - better than the rates for a 60-day (6.5%) and 90-day (6.7%). Can anyone confirm that you really do get 7.25% on the 32-day notice account?

Yes, I can confirm this. Well 6.45% for last month as that was before the rate increase by 0.75 and the account status says earning at 7.2% for this month...

Great, thanks! Odd that it's so much more than the accounts which need longer notice.
And if you give 32 days' notice, do you have to cash out the whole account, or can you just take a portion of the money out? (I've never had a notice account)

You can just take a portion.

And one more qu about the 32-day notice account - is the 7.25% for any balance, or does it have to be at least R100 000? Their documentation is not clear on this point. It says "Earn a base rate of up to 5.00% interest with a 24-hour notice period which you can boost to up to 6.50% based on your Vitality Money status and Discovery Bank products you have." - and stipulates that it's only 5% for balances over R100 000. Then it says "Earn 7.25% interest with a 32-day notice period." So is that 7.25% regardless of your VM status and amount that's in the account?

The 32 day is 7.25% period, regardless of what you have in it. It does not get boosted by your Vitality Money status.

Trying to understand the Discovery Rewards structure was more difficult than some of the exams I've done! I am thinking of switching from FNB to Discovery, but yoh, what an effort...
