Hi all, anyone who is or have been with Discovery Car Insurance - could you share your experience? I managed to find some old posts on them, but nothing recent really... How much do you managed to get paid back for their "fuel payback" rewards programme? How was your claiming experience?
I would appreciate any feedback, thanks!

I had an hour long call requesting a quotation last week, and they managed to quote lower on everything I have. They were meant to email me some goodies the following morning, but didnt, pissed me right off.

With regards to the payback, you need to use specific petrol stations (BP is one of them). I think the funds is paid back into an FNB or Discovery Credit card. The dude said, with a maximum of R750 per month payback, most people see in real terms between R400-R500 per car, which is still incredible. I was actually genuinely interested, I asked if they can do everything my current insurer does, match the excess, let me choose any manufacturer accredited workshop for body repairs without having to get multiple quotes, its policy for whats my fault and whats not etc.... They claimed to be able to do it all.

I asked about their "good driver" thing, where they fit a tracker,or use your mobile. I told them yes, thats fine for my wife, but I dont want anyone to know the gforces i do in my car, being an RS, they said it wont have a negative bearing, its more for accident detection.

Anyhow, its a very long response from me, and nobody got back to me after that initial call, so im still in limbo.

Guy at worked claimed the other day, they took a bit long but everything was fixed up.

You get up to 50% back to max of R800 back on the higher end packages. They told me( when I got a quote) money gets transferred to your bank account each month.

I was with them for a while but won't go rushing back any time soon. I only claimed once which was an OK experience but I constantly fought with them about the good driver 'rewards' payback calculations. Maybe they have gotten better since...

This is what concerns me. I have brokers, and underwritten by Hollard. My service has been so incredible over the past 5 years, that I need to save alot more than a few hundred to convince me to move. You cant undervalue service, that one-on-one interaction and having the confidence that something is getting done. I dont want to fight, I dont want to be sent to some number at a helpdesk.

Glad this post popped up, as Im still on the fence. is the "possible" saving of up to a R1000 a month worth switching.

Join Discovery if you're prepared to hear "we're experiencing a high volume of calls" every time you dial their number.

Didn't fancy having my movements tracked and driving habits picked apart for the fuel refund.

Thanks everyone for your input! I've been doing a lot of research on Discovery and it's really a mixed bag of reviews, and I am especially concerned about the claiming procedure. Been seeing comments where they referred to Discovery as "DisRobbery". But then again, these were older posts so maybe their service have improved now. I do really like the idea of being able to get a few hundreds back on fuel since my car does chow a lot petrol...

Sjoe, dodged a bullet. thanks everyone, thanks OP for raising the topic

And no matter what anyone says when you have an accident at 2am they will use the tracking system to try prove you were under the influence. Exactly where you were, times etc and go get statements and video footage etc from the places.

No matter your decision just compare covers and excesses not only premium.

Make sure before you consider joining them that a) you dont have a tracker installed because their unit cannot be fitted if you have a 'tracker' already installed., and b)make sure that the app is compatible with your phone if you cant go the tracker route.

Doesn't hurt to try it out , can always cancel if you not satisfied

I was with Discovery via my broker who I have been with for years so he helped with the claims but couldn't really help with the 'rewards'. Discovery will suit some, like Outsurance suits some, I am lucky that my current employer pays for my insurance and I just pay the fringe benefit tax.

Whether you want a tracker or not is up to you.

But if you do, and when the tracking company calls you to confirm installation and requests consent to share info with your insurer, be clear that you do NOT want to share any data with them. If you do, good luck getting a claim paid without fighting...

Don't have vehicle insurance with them but do have short term insurance with them.
Experience has been ok but be prepared to do all the work and exercise patience if you have to claim
