I told my broker that there were other disco products I wanted a look at besides disc health. Disco life and Disco short term car insurance. Disco life is set up in such a way that once youve gone through reams and reams of paperwork with your broker, you get sent more reams and reams of paper to fill in online and then they schedule a nurse to come and spend "between thirty and forty mins" with you at your home. Well Fucuk them and Fcuck that. For the pittance they are giving life cover over and the intrusive inconvenience and enormous premiums its just too much hassle. They are busy bodies of the first order.
Next I said I'd like a car quote please. Specifically Third Party fire and theft only.
A letter comes from their car insurers and the chap already knows my requirements as my broker told him, yet he too asks me to fill out reams and reams of paper work. I don't have time, but I answer the 3 questions. 1. have you had a claim in the past 3 years? nope 2. Have you any other insurance on either home or vehicles? Nope. and finally 3. what is the date of issue of your license.? Oh yonks. Prolly when you were sucking a dummy.
Then I state that I'm not filling out any more reams and reams of paper work as its so unnecessary. ayou know my requirements they are so straightforward simple.I just require third party on a very old landrover that has been made roadworthy again. The last third party premium was R300 per month before the sherriff attached the damn thing for the duration of a Divorce.
The next day (This already is a 3 day chinese teeth pulling exercise) the chap comes back and says
Unfortunately, we cannot offer Third Party Fire and Theft cover for a vehicle unless least one Comprehensively insured vehicle is included on the quote.

Please let me know if you would like me to provide a quote to insure the Land Rover on a Comprehensive basis.

Needless to say I told him where he could shove his insurance.
So here we are in a country where Millions of people drive around with NO insurance. Nothing. Nada. and here I am trying to be responsible by getting third party cover so if I should drive over your Jaguar or Porsche or bash into one of you on your schitty little mopeds, then your repair or replacement would be covered. But sorry folks, I can't get 3rd party because these greedy scumbags want broke me to take a hugely expensive full comprehensive policy with them before they will sell me a lowly third party insurance.

No wonder most of this country is uninsured and will continue to be until the Government make 3rd party mandatory.
As for Discovery. Well there's not much to say other than they are hopeless .

Thanks, Hosehead. Have been considering switching insurers, and Discovery *was* on my list.

This is something which the insurance industry has been asking government for since pa fell off the bus, aka for yonks now.

The problem as I see it is that no one department in government wants take ownership of this and see it through. You'd think that it would sit in department of transport, but I do not seem them getting stuck in any time soon. There are just too many changes in the top brass, too frequent and they're not there long enough to approach and/or make a difference.

And the sad thing is that for the next 9 - 12 months nothing will happen in government or its departments - unless it is beneficial to the ANC and getting it re-elected.

And then there will be a lull until 12 months before the next round of elections (municipal).

Thereafter will be the build up to the ANC's conference.

Etc.

Etc.

Etc.

Etc.

The ANC is so focused on power that it has forgotten what's best for the people. So I do not see things such as compulsory third party insurance being a priority as long as the ANC is majority in government.

Pity.

Get yourself a decent broker and let them do the work of getting you the best insurance policy. In the long run it pays rich dividends.

I have been using Alexander Forbes Brokers for at least 15yrs.
They have been really good in obtaining cover, but more importantly sorting out claims.
They fought tooth and nail with an underwriter over a claim on a speedboat motor & got it settled to my amazement.
Their service is excellent.

Yeah, that is the bit that a decent broker does best.

Direct? Unless you know their policy wording better than them, you don't stand a snowballs chance in hell.

All Good I might check Alexander forbes. My disco broker doesn't cover the whole disco product range so sent me to an underling broker who deals with vehicle insurance but thats besides the point
It seems that no company wants to sell third party only? Is that correct?

I use Discovery for auto - their quotes are c10% less and the DQtracker (free tracker) is a plus and a minus. Its free but also collects your driving data

I'm with Alex Forbes for less than a year. I received a letter from them on Monday telling me my premiums are increasing by 16% as
of 1 September. I queried this increase and they said that it is 'a management decision', 'unrelated to the claim I had' and an 'across the board increase'.

I suspect if you had been with anyone & were submitting claims within a year they would re-asses your risk profile.
I have not had any notification (yet) of an increase, so it may just be directed at you.
I personally would insist on being informed as to exactly why the increase was being implemented.

Agreed, but they should just have said so when I asked. What I quoted previously was exactly their response.
