Is discovery in other parts of the world the same or does DSTV custom tailor the shows shown on Discovery Channel here?

You are just itching to blame it on DSTV... They are not responsible for the content of Discovery, NatGeo etc. I still quite enjoy Discovery. Ultimate Survival being one of my favourite shows at the moment.

I posted this in another thread, but thought it better to start a new thread now.

Who thinks Discovery channel has become a load a sh*t? I can watch it all day and the only time I feel like I ever see something interest and LEARN something is when "How Its Made" comes on. Otherwise its full of Orange County Choppers or Overhauling or some other p.o.s bling show. Dont get me wrong, theyre great shows - but they dont teach people anything! 10 years ago I used to be awed by the Discovery Channel. Shows such as "A car is born" with mark evans was awesome. Then there was the mega factory series which showed Ferraris, Lambo's and Harleys getting built! It was amazing! I learnt plenty! Not it seems to be a place for reality tv shows!

Anyone feel the same? Is discovery in other parts of the world the same or does DSTV custom tailor the shows shown on Discovery Channel here?

Wish Beyond 2000 was still on. That was an amazing show!

Ultimate Survival, just like the Survivor series, is a joke.

Well... They will have to call it Beyond 2020 now... Was it really that good though, or were we just easily entertained back then?

I remember on Beyond 2000 the day they showed the first modem... that show was epic.

I would love to watch old episodes of that now to see all the cool stuff that has actually happend.

Hemps, which is the one where they buy junk cars? Anyone remember junkyard wars? that was a cool show!

Wheeler Dealers.

A Car is Born, A Car is Reborn, A Bike is Reborn, A Chopper is Born were all good shows with educational content. The guy explained everything from welding, lubrication, starter motor actuator etc You actually learned stuff from that dude.

The other dude 'buyer' annoyed the crap out of me though, looked like one of those shortman syndrome sufferers, Ed China is cool though.

I don't have DSTV but every time I visit my Dad who does, tune into Discovery and they are on some month where it will be entirely on Cars, next month sharks, then snakes.
Can only watch so many great whites eating seals and jumping out the water.........

Then they will have a decent show at some obscure hour later at night?

Discovery, Animal Planet, Nat Geo are all getting horrendously bad. Discovery takes the cake with biggest load of K@k shows. The amount of Discovery "documentaries" dedicated to Sharks and Nazis is ridiculous. The only reason why I can think, is the shock value they contain.

The last show I watched on Nat Geo was a "documentary" on a Shark (go figure) called "Haai" and Haai's hunt for food at Seal Island AND narrated by Alec Baldwin . It was needless to say unbelievably bad and uniformative.

Have you guys ever watched "Funniest Animal Videos" on Animal Planet? It is up there with the ***** on Channel E!.

On another note. Have you guys seen the new BBC documentary "Life"?? It is absolutely brilliant. Up there with Planet Earth.

American chopper is pretty decent but annoying that they show so many repeats of the older series. I enjoyed the Extreme Engineering when they showed the buildings of the future.
West coast custom is not great, every week the guy is putting the same people on final warnings? also every now and then they pull a pimp my ride move by putting tvs in the boot or door.

BBC knowledge is my new discovery channel, they actually have "DOCUMENTARIES" and not "k@k i don't have to think" shows.

A perfect example is the new series on Discovery "Life After People". It's shown on a Friday night, and I haven't seen it repeated once at other times, and I work from home so my TV is on all the time...

Interesting there has been much critism about ULTIMATE SURVIVOR, although I still enjoy it. Quote from Wikipedia

The show has been criticized for fabricating some of the situations Grylls finds himself in. In 2006 it was revealed that Born Survivor misled viewers into believing that Grylls was stranded in the wild alone when he was not and Channel 4 suspended the show for a few weeks. The issue of scenes being manipulated was raised by Mark Weinert, a U.S. survival consultant. He told the UK's Sunday Times that Grylls spent nights in a motel in Hawaii when he was claiming to be stranded on a desert island. Mr Weinert also alleged that a raft was put together by team members before being taken apart so Grylls could be filmed building it.

There is more there

The problem about the nature programs is that I think most topics have been exhausted. There are few new angels you can put on say lions so we have lots of repeats.

Ultimate Survivor is really good - Gosh just think of it this way: We could be stuck with a show like "Woes" on kyknet!
