Discovery not issuing cards on smart plan. crazy!

Last year i switched from coastal core to this smart plan so you can visit a GP for R50.

now that i need a replacement card, they tell me that they don't issue cards on the smart plan.

i find that crazy - what if you're in a serious accident. surely the paramedics would look in your wallet?

they say you're meant to show people some certificate on your phone... when you need help you wouldnt be able to do that. i find this really mad!
 
The key was in the word "Smart".

Most phones have a Medical ID system now which is where paramedics might look.

In reality they don't actually look at all (even in your wallet) and just take you to the nearest hospital if the issue is that serious.

If it's not that serious...well then you are fine to explain it yourself.

Also think about it...do you ALWAYS carry your medical card on you? I certainly don't. I do however have my phone on me at all times.

If you really want one just print one yourself.
 
Discovery app has a section for cards: medical aid and even ster-kinekor etc. It makes sense, less plastic and all they really care about on the card is the number which they enter into their own system anyway.

And on iPhone it's even better cause it uses the Wallet.

OP is going to lose his mind when airlines stop issuing physical tickets. :)

Can you get to your digital card without logging in? Pretty sure I can't....

My phone doesn't that I can see. Is it visible from the lock screen?

How? Best case my app has a stagnant session open which *might* show you my medical aid number. To get to the cards, requires my password.
Worst case, I exited the app completely and you only get the login screen when you try to open it again.

And as supersunbird pointed out, this is all pointless if your phone is locked anyway.

I'm with Genesis, and they don't issue cards on any plan.
 
Or if your phone is 'taken' post accident.

Anyway.. all serious injuries get treated the same till stable.. then and then alone do they check for medical aid / ID to try and figure out how to proceed further i.e. transfer to other hospitals.

Can't vouch for Android but I believe it's available on most.

iPhone it's on the lock screen under emergency contact and paramedics are trained to access it.

Does anyone know if paramedics actually check for the medical info on your phone?
