Perhaps the companies allow it.
Our company allows any medical aid with a discovery vitality add on.
I'm not on discovery medical aid and have discovery vitality.

Does your employer have a group life policy?
Also some medical aids have an agreement with discovery. I was on vitality on bankmed

Vitality does have its benefits, but just like any other form of discount or couponing, you have to put in some effort. For example, I had the healthy food saving of 25% on my discovery credit card. It worked ok in the beginning when PnP was on the way home from work. I used to get my Vitality premium or a bit more back each month. And we tend to buy lots of the healthy stuff. Problem is firstly, I do not exclusively buy at PnP I go to the shop most convenient to where I live and which has the best quality of most of the items I need. This happens to be the Checkers 100m from where I live. Secondly, my wife also does shopping and she does not have Vitality/discovery credit card. Thirdly, the 25% cash back is determined according to the ratio of healthy foods vs normal and bad foods. Invariably your basket will contain chops, a bag of chips and maybe a bottle of coke or wine. Or just tomato sauce. So you dont get the full 25%.

Sure, I can decide to only shop at PnP, get my wife onto Discovery or give her a secondry card, and buy two separate baskets of healthy food and unhealthy foods and pay separately and using a different method of payment for the unhealthy ones. But for me my time and convenience and sometimes quality of products is worth more than the R25 odd I could have saved.

This is only the food part. I dont go to the movies so that saving is useless to me. The only worth while saving is discounted gym fees but not worth the quality of medical aid imho.

Now with Fedhealth and never looked back.

Ja the quality has taken a death spiral in the past 2 years. Their BEE negotiators are quite obviously terrible since they can't land most of the decent specialists. The threshold nonsense is infuriating if you run out of savings which is now less and less and you run out earlier (I think most families are out in the first third of the year) and have to pay +/-R5000 (on full comp) to get past threshold before they start paying out of hospital expenses and worse they only pay 70% of any drugs for the rest of the year. There are penalties (many hidden) which you only discover when you have no money at that time in the month. They are tightening the tit clamps on all their clients, but truth be told It's not just Disco- All the Med aids have shortcomings in several areas. The best advice I can give anyone is don't ever deal with a broker but go direct to their offices and speak to their cust services reps.

The 10x smart shopper points multiplier makes it worth it on its own

I don't want points, or badges or any nonsense. I want my medical aid to be cheaper because I am a lower risk than the next guy. Like Momentum Interactive on my life insurance. Do the same on Discovery and I will be happy, even if you have to call it Vitality.

Basically every point you earn on smart shopper is multiplied by 10

Pretty certain that only works if you have a discovery credit card. I have vitality, but not the discovery credit card, and am not allowed to link in a smart shopper card.

That said, I don't need it to get to gold level, between the amount of times I visit Virgin Active, Discovery wellness day at work, and the online questionnaires + no smoking + aids blood tests, I usually score well enough points to get into Gold. Next year I will be Diamond status.
