Hey guys im trying to create a partition on my xp installation and the only partition manager i have is vistas disk part i have no internet access so downloading 1 is not an option.Ok so now the problem i have when trying to shrink the drive is that diskpart gives me an error sayin: access is denied. How do i get around this problem.I only have xp installed and i only want to create a partition not dual boot.Any ideas?

Diskpart should be on XP so you don't need the Vista one. The problem is that can't use Diskpart to resize a system disk....

If im not mistaken diskpart is part of vista's installation disk(access it by pressing shift + F10) which is what i used to partition my disk before when i was dual booting with vista.I had xp installed first then created a partition using diskpart with no problems. Then i deleted the vista partition now when trying to create a partition using the above method i get the access denied error.

Oh, I see. Can you see the free disk space in Disk Manager? (It should be there as unused space from the Vista partition)

Yep i can see the free space in disk manager and @wishblade ,how does logging in as admin help because im running diskpart from the vista installation cd so im not logging in at all ,i am booting from cd.

In XP run diskpart from the cmd.
do a "list volume" then
do a "select volume #" where # is the number of the volume u want to extend
and then just type "extend"

Note that the free space needs to be unformated.

The free disk space (unused unformated space) needs to be to the immediate right of the volume u are trying to extend?

Thanks for all the replies guys but i have found the solution.... Just going to buy another hdd Lol abit expensive but less headaches plus i will be using the new drive for backup purposes.
