Dear All, I need assistance with using the Disney+ App in SA. I am using a the Surfshark VPN and managed to register subscription on Disney+. I have also loaded the App on my Android Phone and working on to have this loaded on my Nvidia Shield. However, the Disney App does not load up on the Android phone (with the VPN to US server) loads and hangs with a rotating loading circle. I have cleared the cache and data on the App to no avail. Any suggestions - please message me. thanks

That is one of they ways it tells you you are using a VPN, unless you find a working VPN or at least a location it does not know about, you are SOL

U use express and of the probably 30 locations they have in USA only about half work for Disney+ a bit more for Netflix and like 2 or 3 don't work for Hulu. However, if like me you have all 3 services then there are only 3 locations that work for Disney+, Netflix and Hulu.

So it is funny that Hulu and Disney are part of the same. Big company but hulu implements almost no VPN checking while Disney+ does.

Unless someone has gotten it working with your vpn provider and is on this forum, which is probably unlikely given the sheer number of VPN options and many of us would use express and nord as those are the only 2 that have consistently and reliably managed to work with Netflix which is the primary reason we use them.

You will unfortunately have to play a game of trial and error and hope that at least 1 of the US locations is open on Disney, otherwise you will have to change providers.

That indefinite loading is actually a sign that your VPN is insecure, the reason that happens is because while your IP is valid for USA, other information that it is getting contradicts that and your session token is being invalidated, an error which they do not correctly handle, if you were able to see the network response the error comes back as unreliable location. So your VPN or its app is leaking your real information.

I see you can now bundle directly from Hulu. Might give it a shot

Redirects you to disney to finish up.
Only to create a D+ password. The billing goes through my existing Hulu account. Paid the prorated $3.95 for the rest of the month and I'm streaming D+ from my Roku.

Why not rather use DNS? It works better than VPN in my opinion.

Edit: I Used Disney+ when it launched, but it's the same as pirating, so I just stopped using it. Long ago I set up a US iTunes account so I loaded credit on it using one of the numerous services and got the subscription through the AppStore.

I didn't use any VPN, I just used a smart DNS service. The amount of effort, I had to go through to use it "legally" wasn't worth it, so I went back to sailing the seas.

Because the dns services are hopelessly unreliable and only work for browsers. Netflix and the likes hard code dns servers into the native apps meaning you need to setup physical hardware firewalls on your network to block the dns servers they use in order to use any of the apps.

While using the service from a legal standpoint is not technically different to pirating, piracy does not include the benefits of interest algorithms and the real benefit of a streaming service is discovery, the more you use them the better they get at suggesting things you will like, things you may not have heard of or would not have considered otherwise.

So far Netflix and hulu have been bang on with their suggestions and the bulk of what I have watched on hulu I only ever heard about because of hulus recommendations.

As for a VPN, it's no more complicated to setup than a dns, sure there may be some trial and error for some especially if u need 1 to work for all services, but I connected my VPN back in November already and that was that. I set it and forgot about it.

The effort? I've had a smart dns service since forever and getting D+ to work tonight took zero extra effort.

I get that you might find the monthly subs exorbitant but please don't use it to justify "sailing the seas", it's not the same thing, content creators get paid when you subscribe.

or we could see the end to greed-content-gates? I mean they are creating the situation we need to either jump through hoops or download it ourselves.

The effort wasn't the DNS part - have a properly set up Mikrotik router. The effort was that I'd have to go buy vouchers every month, get scanned images in my email and then manually add it to the account instead of just using a card (since my card is not a valid US card).

I'm pretty sure there are even easier ways now - as you yourself mentioned the Hulu/Disney+ combo.

Untrue. Smart DNS works for most devices. The only device I know not playing well with DNS is the new Samsung Smart TVs. (VPN doesn't work either FWIW) As for hardcoded DNS servers, you're right, it's a headache if you have a stock router.

A proper router can force all traffic on port 53 through itself or anywhere you want to really. This was I got the Chromecast to play along with US Netflix.

Valid point. I can't argue, this is quite useful. :)

In my experience, VPN slowed my network down quite a bit (especially a US connection). On top of that every time you want to change a region you have to go change the endpoint on the router, where with DNS you can usually log into a website and hop to the next region.

In the end, I guess it comes down to preference. I'm out.

It's theirs to distribute it as they seem fit, they created it. You don't have an inherent right to it.

And anyway, the hoops aren't insurmountable.

Legally though the hoops are insurmountable.

Using VPNs and stuff to access content that's not licenced for your area is surely against the rules, even if you are paying for it. Disney content is probably licenced to Multichoice or something like that here in SA.

I agree with you, but it is a stupid way to go about it:

What annoys me is when I wanted to purchase The Lighthouse, I could not find it on netflix, amazon prime, google video, itunes, or even takelot. In the end its just revenue lost for them, and a deleted download for me.

It's pretty much the same with HBO in RSA. I really don't mind supporting showmax, but I simply can't stomach up to 720p (a subpar service) in 2020 when the rest of my streaming services does up to 4k with decent audio (e.g. itunes/apple tv+).

So imho it's superficially created borders riding on greed that will make them feel it in the end which could have been avoided easily.

It's a rather impossible situation, right?
