There has been a lot of threads related to the dangers of radiation from the IBurst UTD, but one question remains...... "How far is your modem placed away from you?" I keep mine at arms length.

Mine's about 8m away on the far side of my room on a window sill which faces the tower.

The power output is so low I doubt there is any radiation to worry about from these modems unless maybe if you stick the antenna in your ear or any other opening in your head for a prolonged period.:D

Apparently the modem should be no closer to you than 30cm. I sit at the PC for at least 7 hours a day. Hopefully I'm at a safe distance from it. ;)

If that distance is true then you have no worries unless your arm is shorter than 30cm.

If you have a CRT monitor you probably get more radiation from that and even more from the big nuclear reactor in the sky.

Care of wikipedia, we remember the relevant physical law:
The intensity (or illuminance or irradiance) of light or other linear waves radiating from a point source (energy per unit of area perpendicular to the source) is inversely proportional to the square of the distance from the source. An object (of the same size) twice as far away, receives only ¼ the energy (in the same time period). More generally, the irradiance, i.e., the intensity (or power per unit area in the direction of propagation), of a spherical wavefront varies inversely with the square of the distance from the source (assuming there are no losses caused by absorption or scattering). For example, the intensity of radiation from the Sun is 9140 watts per square meter at the distance of Mercury (0.387AU); but only 1370 watts per square meter at the distance of Earth (1AU)—a three-fold increase in distance results in a nine-fold decrease in intensity of radiation.

IOW, I'm more inclined to worry about the l-o-n-g call on my cellphone that warms up my ear  than from the UTD sitting even an arm's length from me, much less another room (to say nothing of things like walls in the way!)

The radiation will be directed towards the antenna, anyway I don't think anyone has to worry about body parts getting cooked or radiated by the modem, just don't sit on it or you might become sterile.

The modem is basically the same as a cellphone. I've read that doctors don't recommend sleeping with your cellphone close by. We sleep about 8 hours a day, the exact same time that most of us spend next to our modems. So doesn't this mean that we shouldn't sit close to them?

If you're sitting on the antenna I think you've got bigger problems!

Not quite the same thing as a cellphone since you don't exactly hold it to your ear while browsing now do you?
Or you also don't have it under your pillow either, personally I think you're worrying too much about nothing as far as modem radiation is concerned, you already said it was arms length away from you and that should be more than enough for the tiny amount of power the modem radiates.

And if you have an external antenna then all the radiation is directed towards that antenna.

Depends on how you define that  ..on one hand, the modem is generating its RF internally; OTOH the actual radiation is appearing at the other end of the co-axial cable to which said antenna is connected.

so the hair falling out and glowing green eyes is related to the dodgy food i ate at a cafe in a rush?

heh.

No the hair falling out is from old age and the glowing green eyes are from popping too many pills.

I would be far more worried about the radiation from the basestations and cell phone towers than the puney arials on the end units.
