Distributing HDMI throughout the house

Hey techead,

Yes I completely agree with you - Cat6 is definately the way to go. Its quite silly of him to have put anything less - hes risks a much larger expense if Cat5e doesnt work and he has to rewire the whole thing.

Regarding your question of changing channels - Yes I do want to be able to change channels. We are running coaxial cable alongside the HDMI I assume you mean alongside the cat cable and the changing of channels will be facilitated by the TV-Link feature on the DSTV decoders. I have my doubts over this working - but lets wait and see.

something you also havent mentioned is the distance covered over this whole setup? from what Im seeing, a lot of the setups include the IR signal on the cat cable (if the extender supports it), when its 30m or less. When its more, then they include a additional socket for ANOTHER cat cable to carry the 5v signal.

what unit are you using to connect all the coax connections to the blaster so you can change channels from every room?

Make sure he uses FTP and not UTP connectors on the CAT5e, otherwise the shielding is useless... CAT6 gives you some extra distance. What is the longest cable run? Things that cause interferance on these systems are downlights, fridges, plasma screens etc.

He should be using something like this...

The cables will terminate as an HDMI port on the wall - how he plans on doing this I dont know - but I see the cables have already been wired to the HDMI panels on the wall - take a look at picture.

I would think the longest run is definitely no more than 40m. Maybe even 30m. We have LED downlights so I think there shouldnt be much intereference from them. There are no fridges near the cabling, and no plasma screens either.

WIth regards to the IR signal - like I said - the longest run is 30-40meters - we hope to change channels using the TV-Link system. If that doesnt work we can always use our trust Ellies remote blasters hahaha.

 is he gonna mount something inside the wall?? how on earth is he gonna get the cat5 cable-> HDMI wall port?
