pCloud only has annual and lifetime billing. Ice Drive doesn't even disclose its pricing without signing up, which is so shady it makes me write them off.

Considering how cheaply one can buy 12-month codes for Office 365 in SA, from sites like OLX and Gumtree, it's pretty crazy not to just use Office 365 and the 1TB OneDrive that comes with it. I have bought over 10 codes at this point, always paying between R200 and R400 each.

Not at all they have monthly plans as well they just highlight the others because it's much better value...

Sure one can go with Onedrive but your data is still not going to be private which is probably the main reason why you'd want to leave Google in the first place. Also to muck about with Cryptomator or Veracrypt isn't simplistic.

Thanks for the link. Ice Drive has good pricing, but tbh I'm not sure I'd trust critical cloud storage to a relatively unknown company like that. Any of pCloud, Ice Drive, Open Drive and the like can disappear overnight and absolutely no one can be certain otherwise. I have a high degree of confidence in the security of my personal photo collection, personal documents and work files all being stored by Microsoft.

I'm not sure why you think OneDrive isn't a private storage service? Nothing is shared by default, and excessive security policies just limit your own ease of access. The whole point of OneDrive is to be a natural extension of Windows 10. Files that you haven't accessed in a while will automatically be deleted locally and the file will get a little cloud icon to indicate a need to briefly download it if you attempt to access it. That's awesome, and a huge space saver. Also, OneDrive now has a Personal Vault section - a BitLocker encrypted part of your OneDrive storage. And even without it, large encrypted backups that span multiple files are inherently safe. And if you have individual files that are particularly sensitive, just RAR them up as well with a long password before uploading them.

It's not like you can truly trust any alternative cloud storage anyway. You're just taking their word for what level of security they have implemented.

You surely use a password manager? Just create a secure note for archive passwords. And it shouldn't be something you do often. Most personal and work files aren't worth caring about. Any any that are, just throw them in your personal vault in OneDrive. It's accessible right there in File Manager.

I don't think so. Msft has very, very much more to lose if OneDrive and its vault are compromised. Unlike almost everyone else, they can afford to put in serious security, which they do. Tbh, I'm more confident of their security than anyone else's cloud storage. Outside their DC it's up to me, and I do what makes sense for my needs, with pfSense and OpenVPN playing a big part.
 
As mentioned, sometimes DuckDuckGo doesn't produce the "best" results.
So, for google search results -but without the google tracking- Startpage is a good option.

When you go to our home page (startpage.com) there is a search box with a blinking cursor.
You can type any word or question into that box, and Startpage will anonymously ask Google to look up that topic.
We get the results from Google and give them to you privately.

This is very important, because other search engines like Google, Yahoo, and Bing make a record of all of the things you search for, then use those search terms to create a dossier of information about you and your interests.

Vivaldi ftw. Now if only someone can develop a competing engine that doesn't create a process for each tab and then some. Also don't know why Yahoo and Bing are mentioned since their source is Google.

Sounds like you're doing exactly what you should not be doing by relying on a 3rd party to secure your data. Backup services should only be used for backup and only after you already have your own personal backup or preferably two with one being off site. A backup service disappearing shouldn't have an impact on you and if it does you're doing it wrong.

Sounds like you're doing exactly what you should not be doing by relying on a 3rd party to secure your data. Backup services should only be used for backup and only after you already have your own personal backup or preferably two with one being off site. I didn't mean all the Office 365 codes were for me. I don't even use 365 Home or Personal - my own machines and email run through 365 E3. The above was for various friends or family that I help out. And the equivalent of between R17 and R38 per month for the latest Office apps and 1TB cloud storage is insane value.

I use Backblaze for off-site backups of the sites I host, and around twice a month I delete and replace an encrypted archive of my personal files. I'm not interested in worrying about physical hard drives in my house. In any case, one of the nice things about OneDrive is the utterly miniscule risk that anything can happen to your data. It would be the end of OneDrive if MS announced that some people had lost their stuff, so I trust the necessary precautions to be taken for that to be impossible.

I second that. Startpage is awesome. Been using them for years. I can also recommend Yandex. I use both. Switched to the new Credge(Chromium Edge) from Chrome. Loving it so far. Must say it feels nice going away from Google.

Useless for me as the spellchecker is not up to par and I depend on them. Can not even load other language dictionaries and spellcheckers.
Or am I doing something wrong or am I just a noob?
