Just wondering if anybody knows if these generally also play Xvid etc, and whether there's much difference between DivX and DivX Ultra.

yup, well mine seems to play all variants of DiVX aswell as Xvid.

Divx players are a nice thing to have, but do remember that they run on a hardcoded codec. Meaning it is a fixed codec coded into a chip inside the dvd-player.

Most of these dvd-players suffer when it comes to playing Divx 6.0 stuff (the hardcoded one seems to be a divx5 codec)

Also some of the latest stuff come combined with a different mp3 codec. So the movies either don't have sound at all or slip up every now and then.

Unless u are going to buy a new divx player/dvd player every year. Its gonna be useless.. and a waste of money

Yep, have an LG DVX-173 and it plays every DivX/Xvid I've thrown at it. Occasionally vids stutter a bit or loose voice sync, but a quick rewind usually solves. Only restriction is res cant be higher than 720 x 576.

DivX Ultra is just some DVD type featues as menus/titles/soundtracks etc. nothing really to do with picture, DivX-HD seems to be the next step up in pic size & quality.

True most low end one like my LG only support DivX 3-5, however I've found little 'content' that is encoded in 6 or greater.

My LG has no problem playing mp3 2.0 & AC3 5.1 soundtracks embedded in the DivX.

Depending on manufacturer the low end models only cost R350-R700, so its not too unreasonable to upgrade every year. I'd much rather watch slouched on the couch with the remote than fiddle with the PC, especially when writing a full DVD+R only takes ~ 8min.

LG DVD Recorder (RH7624W) plays pretty much anything I throw at it as well. Nice thing is that you can actually copy the movies to the harddisk, as well as MP3s.

Most DivX players these days are firmware upgradable so when new versions of a codec are released the firmware can be updated to accomodate it. I have a Yamada which has this feature. I believe the Wharfdale from Hi-Fi Corporation has this feature also, though you might have to get the upgrades from them directly as I couldn't find these machines on the web anywhere.

Just ask the salesman when you go shopping (if you can find one who knows what they're talking about).

LG has a certain time each year when you can bring all your LG products to them and they will perform a maintenance and service on it for free. Pretty good deal if you ask me.]

Edit: I suppose they will upgrade the DIVX to the latest version as well during the service.
