365 days a year I listen to dogs barking and disturbing my peace, but I tolerate it in a RESIDENTial area meant for humans to live in peace and quite. I don't complain or threaten my neighbor.

Indian people have animals, colored people have animals, black people have animals. Many multi racial neighborhoods in SA but MAJORITY of whiners and complainers about fireworks are from one section of the community. Are Indian, colored and black dogs immune to fireworks?

I personally do not buy fireworks neither do I like them especially the noisy ones, but when I see people whining just because tHey cannot tolerate anything different from the own culture I feel like rebelling and lighting the loudest crackers just to annoy them for being intolerant idiots. But I do not cos I know better than to stoop to the level of intolerant people.

Last year was at a friends house, guy calls the cops for the tiniest fountain fireworks. Cop comes and we tell the cops "what fireworks? There's no fireworks here" ...cop leaves, my friend lights a massive bomb...never heard from the whiner again. Most of these whiners do not even have dogs or cats. Just whine for the sake of whining. EVERY year without fail.

How do their dogs and cats handle thunder and lightning? It's ok to pay to hunt poor game animals on the farm but oh please hands off our dogs and cats. Double standard hypocrits. Nothing special about dogs or cats, all animals should be treated properly even the ones you put on the braai, otherwise you're a hypocrit.

So much fail in a single post. Let's see, the race card, sweeping generalizations, hypocrisy and then sweeping assumptions.

It must be fun when you can just turn everything into a race row instead of addressing what is really being said.

Learn tolerance from a democratic Multiracial perspective not from how things used to be 30 years ago. I love dogs, I don't like loud fireworks but I tolerate the others who choose to on this one night. Tolerance will get you far in life, arrogance will just make your neighbor angry and liight even louder fireworks.

+1, its rather strange actually. I was expecting the big pay load last night, but instead I got silence. I'm not complaining, as my pets wasn't all over the place to look for a quiet place to hide.
 
Agreed... I heard a few bangs in the distance, and one or two families had some small little fireworks like the fountains and such..

No need to complain.

Same here. Heard one or two soft ones ... and that was it. Doggies did not even lift their heads it was so soft. With Diwali it sounded like bombs going of.

I wish people here were as passionate as driving safely on the road as they are about a blip like Diwali. Get some perspective - over 30 lives are lost daily on our roads - that is those that die, not those that are injured. Will the you please go and torch alcoholism next please. Don't be quiet about it, because you may make a difference and it would be a bigger difference than banning fireworks would ever achieve.

I read a post by Celine yesterday that had me choked up and gave me some perspective. 500+ emotive posts here is such a waste of resources.

I'm quite happy for the alcohol driving limit to be made zero...

The two issue are not related.

We can be just as passionate about both issues. I am very much against drinking and driving, and have taken a few friends keys away from them when they've tried to drive after having a few.

I wish people would devote the same amount of passion to a thread on rape. Diwali comes once a year. Rape occurs everyday. Peoples priorities are so screwed up.

Ockie I think some people's minds are only capable of containing one thought at a time, so they are unable to comprehend that some people may be outraged by more than one thing and be able to express outrage at ONE of those things without having to list every other thing they're outraged by at the same time ...?

Oh, get off your insipid high horses, you wannabe enforcers of morality.

This issue has, at its crux, nothing to do with Diwali in particular. It is not an attack on any one race, religion, custom or creed. It is a simple recognition of the fact that some ignorant, unwashed morons exhibit a desire to express their idiocy in subjecting entire neighbourhoods to sustained and unreasonably loud explosions under the banner of them just observing their traditions. Whether they do so during Diwali, or on Guy Fawkes or on New Year is wholly separate from the matter being discussed.

Further, you have absolutely no grounds on which to assume the position of any of us on any other societal issues. Bringing irrelevant matters into the discussion is a pathetically transparent attempt at introducing red herrings.

NO NO NO! Why be passionate about alcoholism when there are 100s of people who starve to death every day? Rather go be passionate about that!

This type of argument is really dumb, because being passionate about one thing does not mean we can't feel strongly about something else too and you can't honestly expect us to simply not care about certain things that bother us because there are worse things happening elsewhere in the world. That logic is inherently flawed.
 
Lots of posters that I have never seen before popping up in this thread. Very strange.
