If it gets to the point of there being no bottled water available to buy for drinking, you have bigger problems to deal with than your small scale desalination plant my friend.
 
I beg to differ, if we run out of bottled water what is a person left to do but to distill sea water to provide drinking water. Its how people get through survival situations.

If we run out of drinking water the population will be in serious amounts of turmoil. Your desalination plant will be the LEAST of your worries.. your continued survival will hinge on other things entirely.

The violence part I can deal with but I have small kids who will need their water. I can buy a few months supply of food in advance.

You are so incredibly naive if you think you can deal with the violence that will erupt if the drinking water (bottled or tap) supply vanishes.
 
Its naive to underestimate people you don't know crap about. You will be surprised of what you capable of if confronted with a life or death situation.

That is so cute.

I would not be surprised. If you are stressing yourself about a water supply for the situation that there is no drinking water available, then you have NO idea what the social problems are in the process of erupting around you. And if you had a vaguely passable supply of drinking water, you would become a target for many thousands of people in the area.

Only a stupid person would make it obvious that they have water. If only you knew what kind of social problems I had to deal with growing up then you would understand why I am not particularly worried about what might happen. I have a colorful past lol.

Not really. My solutions would be
1. Bottled water. 2.The water from air machine.(that thing is basically an aircon) if you want to spend the money 3. Your method if you need more water (boiling on fire and then condensing). 4 evaporation. You could supposedly get a few letters from a square meter area per day you could scale it to your needs and its the cheapest method.

Some towns did run out of water the past year and people didn't start killing each other.
There's different degrees as to how bad things can get and a few guys able to get their own clean drinking water can only help.

you want to cool the steam down as fast as possible since salt doesn't evaporate. the problem is bio contaminants and water is depraved of minerals. The water basically becomes acidic and dissolves all the minerals in your body. leading to organ damage and heart failure with prolonged use. the RO systems has a ceramic filter the adds minerals to the filtered water to stop this process. Good luck OP we here on the highvelt have no other options to get water.

edit: RO can also go in 2 depending on how long the filters/membranes last.

Honestly the OP is being ridiculous.

For a fraction of the energy to create drinking water from seawater, follow this simple plan:

1) Ensure fuel in car.
2) Drive to your nearest hardware store.
3) Purchase 20l containers (ideally, ones designed for water)
4) Drive to Newlands (easiest at Newlands spring, but there are perennial streams on the mountainside)
5) Fill the containers with water
6) Drive home.

Next time you can skip steps 2 and 3. If you do not live close enough to Table Mountain, substitute your nearest mountain range for step 4.

can just make a mini solar desalination plant with a bowl , a glass and some cling wrap
