DIY Desalination Plant

...water is depraved of minerals.

...RO systems has a ceramic filter the adds minerals to the filtered water to stop this process.
It's a myth that your body needs the "minerals in water".

Your body can only metabolise organically bound minerals, ie those in plants and animals. The minerals in solution in water pass straight through the body - or they cause damage by lodging in eyes, for example.

It's almost impossible to find the truth on the internet because so many sites regurgitate the false info retailed by the water-pushers. Not being a biochemist, I eventually had to contact several top water scientists to get to the bottom of this. All three insisted that the best water was pure distilled water such as clean rainwater, which has no minerals.

No our bodies do not use the minerals in water. The minerals in water just saturate the water that it doesn't dissolve and adsorb the minerals in our bodies.

As long as you replenish by eating mineral rich foods there shouldn't be a problem. or just add a remineralisation process if it is long term. just to be safe. I personally can't live without my RO anymore. tap water has become so bad you start feeling sick just by opening the tap.

RO is much safer than Distillation but you will die from dehydration long before mineral deficiency.

Intersting, I wonder how much they go for?

A veritable crap load..

I looked a while ago, and just providing sufficient drinking water would cost around R10k for the unit. So take anywhere from 15 to 20 years to break even at current water prices.

Honestly the OP is being ridiculous.

For a fraction of the energy to create drinking water from seawater, follow this simple plan:

1) Ensure fuel in car.
2) Drive to your nearest hardware store.
3) Purchase 20l containers (ideally, ones designed for water)
5) Drive to Newlands (easiest at Newlands spring, but there are perennial streams on the mountainside)
6) Fill the containers with water
7) Drive home.

Next time you can skip steps 2, 3 and 4. If you do not live close enough to Table Mountain, substitute your nearest mountain range for step 5.

4) Buy an automatic rifle (black market) in case someone has decided to take over said water source. Also, be on the lookout for water robbers on your way home.
8) Build a vault.

9) Gather a following of dehydrated crazies
10) Use them to become the local warlord of your town
11) ??!??!?!?

I had the exact same idea as the OP.3 mins away from the beach.

I wanted to dig a 2x2m hole and then line it with plastic with a catch bucket in the bottom surrounded by sea water with a heavy black plastic on top.

Im going to do some calcs but I dont see it being viable.
