Howdy folks!

What are your home DIY security tips/ boody traps (if any)? A Home Alone type deal, if you will.

When we were kids and experienced our first robbery, we thought we were super clever and poured car oil on the top of the pillars in the hopes that if they came back, they'd slip in it and hurt themselves so they couldn't run away and be arrested.

Tonight I am going to be experimenting with thin wire (to trip) around our new property (as last night two of our cars were broken into and we haven't even been there for a full week).

Damn, where do you stay?

Also booby trapping is a risky business as, should the criminal get injured or dies, you will be held accountable by law

Yip, we have a place along the coast that used to be broken into a lot, they would smash a large expensive windows and upturn everything in the place, we never left anything of value but they always came back.
SO block of wood with imbedded glass or nails at the entrance to every window, farkers broke in and stepped on the glass one and cut themselves to hell, blood everywhere.

Other owners used trigger mechanism, shotgun shell loaded with grass seeds or salt, trigger it when you come through a window and bang!

these days no one i know uses anything like this anymore.

Two safes - one with valuables and one with trinkets and a little cash. In the decoy, if you know what you are doing, you can wire a trip on the panic button to your alarm co (if you have one).

Yea cause the stupid laws protect the criminals too much, it is so sad :(

I once thought of using one of those laser pointers together with a photodiode (or whatever its called on the receiving side).

Idea was to set it up with small fixed mirrors around the yard so that the beam was bounced from point to point all over the yard. Anybody looking over the wall will not see the beam but would see all the red dots where its being reflected.

If the beam is broken then an alarm should go off inside the house to warn you. Almost like a mission impossible type thing :D

If its set up properly it should be ideal. Set it high enough so it does not go off for dogs and cats and it should work fine. Should also be a very good deterrent for somebody seeing all the red dots all over the place and if they don't then you at least have an alarm warning you somebody is breaking the beams.

This seems like a very good idea will do some research on this! Wonder how long the lazer will last while on?

Get yourself Self Defense equipment ......like a air-gun for instance !!! They range anything from R500 - R3000 depending on what you want? Try a handheld mini Crossbow with various arrow tips that can certainly stop the intruder. Remember these are Self Defense items that don"t need licenses and if used properly won"t kill, but certainly will cause tremendous PAIN for the victim.

Did exactly this last week.
"Gun" right next to me here on the desk with pepperspray.

Tested it on several objects and it certainly won't penetrate flesh or thick clothing, but will hurt as *!#$%* especially if you nail a chap on any softspot.

The pistol's rate of fire if a bit low imho though, so would actually recommend something automatic to "stun" the mob while you enter melee range to disable him with the pepperspray and other non-lethal options at hand.

The normal pointer uses two or three 1.5V watch batteries. Sure one can attach it to a little DC transformer pushing out the same voltage. So power should not be a problem.

One thing that might be is the laser diode. Not sure how long that will last when burning for 8 consecutive hours each night.

In this instance remember to always ascertain if the people breaking in are armed. The paintball guns etc are a great self defence tool if used against an intruder who has a knife etc, but if they have a proper weapon it could end up costing you your life if they decide to shoot back with proper bullets.

I would recommend installing perimeter beams and good security gates and burglar guards. They beams are an early warning system while the gates etc are a good physical deterrent that makes it more difficult for them to get in ( especially if the beams have already triggered your armed response)

I like those automated paintball gun turrets, designed to keep residences secured. Is these actually legal?

Also saw a similar concept which could shoot pellets etc. This particular one had automatic target recognition (ATR) :erm: trustworthy...

I lived in a flat where they kept breaking into one single window.

I put a 1.5 meter pile of cleaned bottles, jars and other glass stuff under the window (if they try while I am home I can hear it).

Oke tried breaking in, I got home and he took nothing, just left a huge pile of blood all over the broken glass shards then fled.

The problem with the shotgun approach is too many innocent people have been killed. It was very popular in the 80's and remember reading about a cafe in Paarl where the owner got killed by setting off his own trap.

Sounds like me new house, in the last two months (moving in only in two weeks) they have broken in twice and neighbours have had their cars broken into a couple of times as well.

I'm installing these on my wall next week to deter tossers from climbing the wall. They are very sharp and strong. The rotate individually which makes it impossible to climb, even if they throw a blanket over it:

Guy I chatted to at a braai told me his boundary wall had a favorite jump-over point for criminals to get into his property and neighboring yards. So what he did was made a flowerbed at that point inside his property and put sharpened steel rods, with sharpened barbs welded on, embedded into the soil with creeper plants all around. Couple of weeks later 2 guys allegedly came over that wall, woke his household and some neighbors, but managed to get away leaving copious amounts of blood all over. He has not had anyone jump into his yard for 8 months since.
