I've recently got a Gopro and have been eyeing out the phantom 2 drone as well, love the views you can see that you'd never get otherwise.
Amazon has it for 900 dollars with the zenmuse gimbal as well. (a good 4 grand cheaper than here)
Just wondering if anyone has imported one, knows the customs etc?

Add about 30-40% to the cost for customs, VAT etc. Also check if Amazon ships the product to SA.

So then it works out roughly the same as getting it here. Sad.

They don't, but a friend was gonna ship it for me from there.

I bought the phantom 2 vision plus a few months back when it was released, purchased direct from DJI, but had to use a forwarding company as they don't ship to ZA.

$1,389 + $122(shipping) R2200 (customs).

Landed lost was around 18k (exchange rate at the time was +- 10.48)

Note that flying a drone with a camera is now illegal according to the CAA.

Flying with a camera or just flying with/without camera?

Not really worried about it as I don't use it that often and will play the ignorance card if I get caught :D

Yeah I have done some research on the matter and it seems there is a grey area at the moment, if you obey certain rules, such as not flying over roads etc you shouldn't get into too much trouble. The cops where I live will be more interested in playing with it than anything else anyway.

Thanks for the help, it seems it will work out abou the same price as here so I'll just have to do it. Might import the ios downlink though.

The rules have been released. You can speak to SAMAA regarding them. They are basically the radio control association. You have to have visual sight of the multi rotor at all times. Fly in designated radio control areas. Cannot fly higher than 400 feet above the ground. It is illegal to not have sight of it for example flying fpv.

The One I have is the Vision 2 plus, which is the newer version.. Check the specs, before purchasing

The newest item on SAMAA's website I can find is dated 2010 and says UAVS do not fall under model aircraft?

There's a site where they do bulk orders, the more orders they get the cheaper the price. Can't recall the sites name though.

think it's massdrop and not sure of their reach.
