Hello chaps,

Taken from my Dlink 2640U, 4meg line:

Downstream Upstream
SNR Margin (dB): 20.6 12.0
Attenuation (dB): 33.0 20.5
Output Power (dBm): 9.1 17.3
Attainable Rate (Kbps): 10912 1056
Rate (Kbps): 6144 640
K (number of bytes in DMT frame): 193 21
R (number of check bytes in RS code word): 0 0
S (RS code word size in DMT frame): 1 1
D (interleaver depth): 1 1
Delay (msec): 0 0

Is everything ok as noted? I'm sure 'Attainable Rate' should read 4096? I've checked Telkom site and I can upgrade to 10meg.

Thank you in advance :)

I would assume attainable rate is the max your line can handle to the exchange. I'm on a 1MB account & mine is as follows: (same router)

Attainable Rate (Kbps): 12352 1224
Rate (Kbps): 1024 512

'Attainable Rate' on the D-Link ADSL modems refer to the theoretical maximum speed that you can synchronize at using the current modulation technique (ADSL2+ or G.Dmt), but does not imply that your Exchange support that kind of speeds.
The values are calculated from the SNR margins, Line Attenuation and probably Output Power values to some extent - or at least this is my best guess :)

Currently your ADSL is running at 6Mbps down & 640kbps up. I'd guess that you should be able to bump it up to like 8Mbps down & 768kbps up without any issues.
Currently your upstream SNR isn't too great, which would be the main reason why they probably didn't bump you up from 6Mbps.

Thank you guys :), so Pada should I still ask Telkom for a bump up to 10meg or settle for 8meg? Or just wait until the 10meg prices come down a bit.

10Mbps is playing with the lion's balls.

Rather stick with anything between 6-8Mbps.

Please note that if you have an uncapped account, that you pay quite a premium for the accounts faster than 4Mbps, where as the capped accounts should give you 10Mbps speeds without costing more.

Thank you Pada :), I'd imagine you mean via torrents yes? 'Cos I have an uncapped 4meg account at present.

Seeing that you have just a 4Mbps uncapped account, there is absolutely no point in letting your ADSL sync faster than 5Mbps.

I should've stated that thing about the capped accounts better though.
What I wanted to say was that uncapped accounts are usually limited to a specific speed, like 384kbps/1Mbps/4Mbps, where as capped accounts are only limited by a cap and not by a speed.

So if you have a 1Mbps uncapped account and your ADSL is synchronizing at 10Mbps, then you will not be able to download any faster than 1Mbps.
However, if you have like a 1GB capped account on that same ADSL connection, then you should be able to download at like 9Mbps.

I have no problems with 10MB, but fortunately I'm about 2km away from my exchange. If you are close to the exchange, it could be old rusty cables thats causing lots of interference. After many complaints, Telkom replaced my 'last mile' copper cables with new shiny ones and since then my line has been absolutely perfect.

Find out the location of your exchange and if its nearby, you should phone telkom (regardless of what your ISP account it) and complain about your bad SNR.

4mb account can burst past 512kbs(4096/8) sometimes or mine does, having 4mb account with 4mb line, and a 6mb line now really made difference in 1080p streaming for me, though it could just be me :)

as 1080p need tad more then 430kbs sometimes, having that extra burst for streaming is nice, should give 8mb go , check how if can get 700kbs burst maybe :P
