Do 6230s explode?

I was in the cell shop this morning finding out about getting a 6230 on contract. The sales person mentioned that the phone can take up to a 128 meg memory card. I asked her if you could put a 512 one in if you wanted. She said 'Look, the phone supports up to 128 meg. You could put a 512 one in but the phone will probably explode or something'. She was quite serious. Is this true? Could this be related to the story thats been in the news lately about Nokia getting sued for a phone that blew up? Or this just another case of sales people talking absolute nonsense?
 
Bwahahaha that's nonsense. There's a possibility that the software on the phone may not be able to address 512 megs but in this day and age it would be stupid not to support it. I'd do a bit of googling if I were you fergus.
 
Methinks the only exploding phones are the ones modified for <edited old_text="assination">ass-ass-ination</edited> attempts, but I suppose it is possible that the battery might explode if you threw your phone in/on the braai.

Apparently, if you spontaneously combust with a phone on your person, it can actually explode.

I was fairly alarmed at finding this out, so I've decided to carry a 6ft stick with me. I tie my cellphone to the end of it and reel it in when it rings.

It's a bit of a mission driving - luckily I've got a hatchback, so I open it up and shove my 6ft stick out the back with the cellphone on it.

So far, luckily , I haven't spontaneously combusted.
 
lol@bb_matt. I remember reading about spontaneous combustion when I was a child and it totally freaked me out :)

Actually, the exploding mobile has a factual base. Some knock-off batteries in mobile phones did explode, out east somewhere, can't remember where anymore.

This could happen when the current load is just too great on the battery and it starts heating up. Gas buildup will make the battery expand like a balloon and it can then pop or 'explode'.

No known cases in SA though. But beware putting any old battery in your mobile.

hehe - I think we ALL freaked out at that one !

I remember reading it first in one of those "Get issue 2 free with 1 and a free binder !" from some or other magazine launch called "Wierd World" or "Science, Nature and Cheese" - probably the latter.

There was that story of some old bag who had just a leg left - perfectly intact - the rest of her body was cinders. That was sure freaky.
In the photo, she even had a high heel shoe (circa 1969) on that remaining foot ... *shudder*
 
Ok, this really is one of those fun threads that has to be opened up for comments from the peanut gallery, I'm leaving a link for v3g to follow if it is a real concern that we should be aware of :).

Now, I have to "." out that if I were in the process of spontaneously combusting, my phone exploding would be the least of my problems, but just in case, I recommend that bb_matt gets a bluetooth phone with a b/t headset - it should alleviate the need for a long stick, as to whether the b/t headset is also subject to explosion, well I cannot think of everything now can I? :D

In theory, a lithium ion battery can explode. But it is extremely unlikely that a 512 card will cause this to occur. It is more likely that the card reader firmware is unable to address 512MB. I know that this is the case with many of the Sony Ericsson phones like the P800/900, but I do know that the P910 can use up to 4GB.

So if you put a 512MB card in to your Nokia, probably nothing will happen. That is absolutely nothing, so no reading or writing to the card.

On a side note, what on earth do you want to store on your card that requires 512MB of memory?.

Pakistan / India border I believe.

As far as I know.

I did some in-depth research into the use of cellphones in that war torn region about 6 years ago as part of a student visa holiday franchise.

Apparently, the high altitude coupled with the extreme temperature and magnetic way lines in the area caused a series of explosions in a certain make of battery - this almost caused a major international incident with both India and Pakistan indicating terrorism was involved.

Luckily sense prevailed !

MP3s of course. The 6230 has a mp3 player. It also has a camera so you can store your pics on the card as well. This really looks like a cool phone. I can get it free on a weekender. Anyone got one already?
 
Okay I did some googling as Perdition suggested and it turns out that lots of people have had problems with the 6230 and various flavours of MMC cards. My apologies to the saleslady for thinking she was talking nonsense.

There is a list here of compatible cards although its not authorative because with some cases 9 times out of 10 it doesn't work and then for one person it works. Weird.

So the bottom line is you should try out the cards before you buy and try get one the 'compatible' makes.

There we go ic, at least we ended 'on-topic' :)
 
:) why 'ended' - this thread will live on, until it implodes on itself & generates a gravitational field that drags everyone through their monitors/lcdz/plasma screens...

About that magnetic lines thing bb_matt mentioned, is that maybe gravity in the area?, and not magnetism?, what was the altitude? - gravity is stronger the closer you are to the core...

Actually the P910i can handle 1GB. And in owning one, I would want to store my MP3's, photo's, video recording and a few other things. Also SE just launched the first Walkman phone that comes with a 512MB card.

I only learnt that 4 hours ago while reading the manual of car with an onboard compass, which needed calibration accoridng to your location on the planet.
mmm.. so perhaps "popcorn cell phones" do exist if you're in the right area, at the wrong time :rolleyes:
but what are the odds
and technology is moving along at a delicious pace anyway :D
 
Ummm...perhaps we are overlooking the effects of solar flares on cellery phones...

The Smallville factor - picture Clark trying to make a call on a 6230 during heavy solar flare activity...that phone was toast b4 it even got a chance to explode...

To be honest with you, it's no Joke nor the first time I've heard about Nokia Exploding, I was reading an Article back in 2003 where a Nokia 7210 exploded and some other nokia headset aswell, there could be possibility it might explode, then you can Sue nokia for damages, made!!!. Since then I've been Really Afraid of getting Nokia, just now it explodes in my pocket, I might not tell the story. I'll see if i can get some links for you. So you can see them and will update them if any later incidents happen
