do Broadband packages

The only catch is that you still have to pay for your telephone line rental (+-R100pm).

Just don't opt for any contracts. If you do a self install, you save on the installation costs, and they throw in a free modem.

At present, you'll get 6gb's out of the 3gb cap. But that is subject to change. Many TI clients used to get a lot more from their caps.

If the line rental is the only catch then I don't mind since I'm paying for that now anyway, and my existing phone line supports ADSL.

As for contracts, yeah I'll stay clear of those since I already burnt my fingers with the iburst contract which expired end April and they are still deducting the contract amount.

Whichever way I decide to go won't be before August or September, and it will probably be the level 3 do package unless someone else here has had problems.

Thanks for your feedback on the subject.:)

I have been happy with it for the 2 months I've been using it.

Thanks for the feedback milomak, seems so far it could be a good choice for me.

Gatecrasher, you mentioned something about also having 30GB local in another thread, what is the charge for that bandwidth?

This may be a bit off topic but I just checked the Cybersmart website and am I right in saying that their all-in-one 384kb 3gb price is R259. Does this mean all I pay per month is R259 excluding Telkom's R111 and I get 3gb on a 384kb line. If its true then Cybersmart has to have the cheapest adsl around.

being cheaper doesn't mean it's better... might be a BIG catch in those contracts :(

I'm also looking for a feasible option, was looking at the uncapped option but 5k for a 4Mbps uncapped is too much...

With cybersmart you get 3 gigs pm and thats it. Then you have to buy more, no getting away with 6gigs on a 3 gig account like with TI. Ive been with them for a while and had no problems at all.

Catch, if you can call it that is that you can only use your account on your adsl line. (means nobody can steal your 3gigs usage too)

Month to month and a free modem :)

They are by far the cheapest in the 384k circuit.

Is there any way to get the free modem If I have ADSL installed already?

Dean, Whats the catch on your uncapped service? R684 for 192k uncapped...

You can get 30GB local only accounts from OpenWeb or WebAfrica for R130. It also gives access to the IS News Server.

Or you can get a 2GB IS account from Openweb for R159, which includes 28Gb of local after your cap is finished.. In my experience, IS will only cap your international at about 4GB. This account is probably the best value for money you'll find in SA.

My idea is to use this at the start of the month and get it capped quickly, then use it as a local only account thereafter. Then I have a SAIX account for international traffic.

You can use local only and international (eg doBroadband) connections simultaneously with RouteSentry, which will route all local traffic to the local account, and all international traffic to the SAIX account.

Thanks for the above info Gatecrasher.

What are your thoughts on the "ADSL Complete packages" offered by Webafrica since they seem to be similar to the "do" packages offered by telkom, except you need to take a contract if you want a "free" modem.

The reason I ask is that I'd expect a better technical service would be offered by Webafrica than from telkom or am I mistaken?

They're essentially all selling the same product, the customer service might be better from Web Africa but if its a line fault Telkom's still going to have to come out and fix it so it probably won't make that much difference in practice. The major advantage to the Telkom accounts is that they're not hard capped so you can usually get more than double your usage, whereas with Web Africa or any other ISP 3GB will only get you 3GB.

Thanks for the reply Syndyre, I guess I'll go for the "do" package then since from the replies so far it seems that nobody has had any bad problems with it so far.
