My computer does weird things from time to time.
My guess is that I have a virus, I am not PC literate, so I need some assistance.
1. the mouse will all of a sudden flicker across the screen
2. when selecting a link, a new window opens each time, and the page I am leaving does not close.
CAPTURE!.jpg
3. when typing the letters arrear in caps etc. whilst I have not selected caps.

4. when selecting an item (using the mouse). All items above the selected item are automatically selected and when opened all items are simultaneously opened.
Hope I have made myself understood.

that happens when you press the SHIFT key whilst clicking a link or selecting a file in explorer

Sounds more like a keyboard problem than a virus.

First off download malware bytes and run a full scan. Then try restart the PC in safe mode and see if the problem goes away. Running XP? Looks like it. Press F8 when booting up to enter safe mode.

Windows 7. Thanks Gregmcc, will give your suggestion a go.

Correct, makes sense, however I am not pressing the shift key.
From the look of the URL it seems you have Shift enabled however if you are not pressing it then it sounds like you have "StickyKeys" enabled. When it happens again i.e. shift is enabled without pressing if you want to disable "Sticky Keys" press Shift 5 times in succession to disable/enable it.

I think probably you are enabling stickykeys accidentally when you type.

Or maybe your keyboard is dirty. Turn it upside down and tap it gently to get rid of anything lodged in it. If you've spilled anything on it, dismantle it and clean it out. If you are not happy cleaning it, get a technician to do it for you.

I have tried this, I guess I should get a technician involved as the last time I removed keys from my laptop, I could not replace them after I had cleaned the key pad.

I downloaded and ran malware byte, there were no reported infections.

Probably pulling wire near the keyboard and the shift key got stuck.

Unplug your keyboard, and use the virtual keyboard to play around on your pc, that way you'll know if your keyboard is faulty.

To get to Virtual keyboard, Click "Start" type OSK and hit Enter, it will come up.. And then of course, unplug the keyboard and have a go around and check if it still does the same thing.

Like a lot of other replies said, it looks like a faulty keyboard somehow.

There's a chance your mouse might be the problem in some instance like in #1 and #4.
