I am running fedora 13 and I run as root (:D)

now every time i try go to a website like mail.google.com I get a security certificate error saying the cert is not valid.

Any ideas how this can happen?

Only thing I can think of, offhand, is that your root certificates might be outdated. This is used as part of the handshake when connecting to secure sites and does update every now and then (probably about every 4 years or so)

But this is just quickly offhand, wouldn't really be able to say without some investigation.

I would rather NOT log in as root, and rather create a user account for general usage.

Besides, if some junk manages to infect your PC, it'll go right through your whole PC (should you be logged in as root).

And it's not a good idea. Stupid things do happen.

Doubtful, since mail.google.com is signed by Thawte, which hasn't changed in a while, and he's running a relatively new distro:

I am running fedora 13

Virus on linux... not likely.

But you can still get compromised.

@Silver-O-Surfer: reload your box, and don't run as root. There is not good reason to run as root.

Some "smart" proxies offload the SSL, the corporate proxy here at the office does the same.

Only way you would know if you have a virus is if a doc confirms it for you. You will probably have a runny nose & fever.

your pc could have a virus but you could try updating your webbrowser....

Call me paranoid, but I wouldn't be doing anything involving a username and a password if I'm connecting to a proxy that hijacks SSL connections.
