+1 for ultrabook first (not a plain laptop, because you need 8+ battery hours and manueverablity [yes it makes a huge difference, no matter how strong you think you are]). Then awesome smartphone, then tablet. If smartphone not gonna be really awesome (like Note 2), then tablet before smartphone.
Smartphones are the inevitable and soon ubiquitous future. It can be a huge distraction, but since it is inevitable and soonly ubiquitous, you have to deal with this now. More than its risk, it can be of unestimatable worth to self enrichment (of the mind) and productivity.
I say you must get one. Get a high end Android, or if you really must, an iPhone. But for the love of all that is dear, do NOT get a BB.
Use Google Drive. No matter where you are, you can work on your document, and when you reach your ultrabook, you can continue straight from where you left off. You can collaborate - in real time - with your task groups, no need for sending clunky email attachments to and fro or for version control. This is equally so on your tablet.
Or review pdf's, or whatever, from wherever. Most modern textbooks come with an electronic version of itself that can be downloaded. Make note scribbles on them if you are smart and get the Galaxy Note 2 smartphone - if you're gonna go 'really smart' smartphone for university, you may as well go BIG, because you need to comfortably pack enough words into that 5.5 inch glorious screen to read and make notes efficient enough. No 4 inch or 3.5 inch crap, please. (You know who I'm talkin' 'bout). I can't stress size enough, if you are intending to put the phone to productive, varsity use.
It may even be better to take notes on pre lecture electronic pdf sendouts with your Note 2 / tablet, than to use real printouts, which can quickly accumulate and become a huge mess, instead of it all being on Google Drive (on any really smart mobile device, ie Android [or, again, if you must, iPhone]).
What if your dorm or campus has cheap/free wifi? Skype calls and other IM services can be invaluable.
If your smartphone not gonna be really awesome, like Note 2, then a tablet will be almost as invaluable. Long battery life (of top'ish end tablets and up) and great reading and note taking potential (along with scribbles on the pdf version) can be really invaluable. Pair this with a bluetooth keyboard enclosed in a leather cover, and you are set for the whole day. Bear in mind, that it is a pain to format documents up to article standard on mobile devices, so your ultrabook comes first, where you can finally reorganise and neatly format all the notes you have taken.
