Do I need to cancel MTN voicemailbox?

I was told by an MTN agent when I activated my phone for roaiming, that I need to cancel my mailbox before I leave. If I don't, any calls which get forwarded to my voicemail will be charged to me at international rates?
Is this true?
Couldn't find anything to verify this online.
 
so you don't pay for someone to leave a message on your voicemail- cos that's what she told me
 
Ok spoke to Godfey at Supercall Cellular.
Confirmed that I will be charged if any call goes to voicemail EVEN if not retrieved "because you are using an overseas network"

I can't remember those charges, something is confusing me. Are they then charging you TWICE? When you retreive the voicemail AND when it's being recorded? Huh? That means they're TRIPLE dipping. The person phoning you are paying + you pay this too + then you pay for retreiving it.

The real question i would ask is "how much" ? How do they charge this? Per minute based on duration of the recording voicemail [unretreived] ? Or per voicemail count? Or what?

Also, your voicemail box is not overseas, it's still in SA. So i can understand being charged to call home to listen to messages, but paying while it is being recorded and your phone is off? So if i know someone is roaming and i don't like them, i just spam their voicemail..huge bill?

Anyway i always buy a prepaid sim overseas and sms everyone my new number and off i go. This roaming thing is a load of crock.

mtn developed a system called imail for customers who roam. I have tested this (locally) and you are sent a email with your voicemail in wav form, so that you do not have to make an international call to check voicemail.

go to www.mtn.co.za and go to the login section, or phone 1555 for help (if you can't get through to 1555 try 173 if you are prepaid or 808 if you are contract).

i read an article today where someone was charged R275 000 for roaming, it convinced me to never roam, no matter what.
 
But you willl still be charged for the call going to voicemail.
 
If someone phones you while you are overseas and your phone rings and then goes to voicemail, you pay for the call being diverted to the voicemail (call back to SA). The person calling you will always pay normal SA call rates. If your phone is OFF and someone calls and leaves a voicemail, you pay nothing. (call not diverted). To retrieve your voicemail, you pay a international call. For MTN you can enter *111# and the voicemail will call you back which you still pay, but is much cheaper. (Something like R4/min)

Cool, that makes sense. Last time i roamed i kept my phone off at all times, and then just retrieved voicemail once a day, that's why i don't recall any charges other than call to the voicemail box itself.
 
Ja, leave the phone off and check your emails for voicemail. you could even leave your sim at home and do this.
