Do I really need an SLR camera?

Which settings that don't display in the viewfinder do you change often?
I like to keep a check on the histogram etc.

BTW, a box containg a 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM just landed on my desk :D
This lens would be a winner even without the IS.

Best walk-around for me.

Edit: The high quality high ISO capabilities these days may reduce the need for IS ?

One case I can think of, is for those of us with little pentamirrors and without splitscreen/microprism focusing screen viewfinders who need to be able to manual focus when using macro; having live view with magnification would be great in these cases :)
Maybe - I dont do much macro work and I still find the Pentamirror on my 400Ds perfectly usable.

I wish the histogram was more accurate though.

And showed separate values for R, G and B and not just overall luminosity :D

swift412, you might have some benefit from CHDK on your camera. I know it gave bwana's 400D some extra legs.

I've heard about CHDK before but I thought it was only for the PowerShot series. Thanks, I'll have a look

So I've been digging around a bit and looked at the Nikon D5000 and Canon EOS 1000D. Both of these look exceptionally well with the Nikon's pricetag much higher than Canon's.

From what I've seen through example photo's taken with both - the Canon's images look better and smoother for me personally.

Any thoughts, is the Canon EOS 1000D any good or is the higher pricetag for Nikon D5000 better?

Personally, I'd go for the Canon 450d rather than the 1000d.

Me too.

Or the 500D?
Agree, but looking at the prices (ODP):
1000d + kit lens R5999
450d + kit lens R7899
500d + kit lens R8999

The OP was worried about the Nikon d5000 vs the Canon 1000d, so these should also be in his thoughts:
Nikon d5000 + kit lens R9299

OK I looked at other photographers' photo who use the 450d and I must say wow! The quality, smoothness and texture on some of those photos are amazing.

So after some research (looking at Nikon d3000, Nikon d5000, Canon 1000d and Canon 450d I am leaning toward the 450d)
