I can second that having someone in the family have a vehicle from the same stable aka Alfa Romeo 147 Selespeed.

It was a fantastic car ,until it started making some funny noises,dealership ended up replacing the engine at a cost of R25k to Fiat and still the noise persisted.Then they decided to change the gearbox at a cost of almost R50k to Fiat and still the noise persisted.......needless to say car was sold before the 100000km mark was reached because we were not going to be willing to spent R75k on repairs for a car worth R200k out of warranty if something went wrong.

So a two year old car with 90k on the clock lost a whopping R125k on resale value as we ended up trading it in for a merc and got R75k for it!

Lucky it wasn't a 159!!

As I said in another thread, last week we offered a guy R 140 000 for a 2012 with 17 000 km on the clock - car cost 428 000 new.........

Eina moer, that's rough. Still, some dealerships try their luck, we got 4 offers from 4 different Toyota dealerships last weekend, and they differed by up to R35,000!
 
I was actually very impressed that I could trade-in my wife's Fiat Palio for more than I ever advertised it on Gumtree.

It was an utterly **** car though.

We are all linked to Autobid who set the prices, so it is difficult to shop around - have the car checked in Pinetown and you get the same price in Umhlanga. :(
 
Most cars are taking a beating when trading in to a dealer.

I sold my corolla with only 20 000km on the clock and remainder of warranty and service plan(+12 months old). The best price I got was still R20K below trade in. Many were way below book.


But the Fiat and Alfa. They are such slow movers, I am not surprised at the poor trade in value. See what the volvo guys get on trade, that will make you cry!

I got offered full settlement on a 2013 vw polo 1.4 comfortline.

Ah that's not ideal. There seem to be different systems used by the Toyota dealers up here which probably results in the disparity, but just goes to show what a bit of shopping around can do. The offer we accepted was R5,000 over book trade value interestingly enough, but I suppose that's due to the demand for White Hilux Auto diesels.

Oh i know ALL about Volvo's. I have had 2. Great cars, very underated, very expensive when they break, and they do, but was lucky to offload at settlement values.

It's not an ideal set-up at all, and I hate it - much preferred it when the Used Car manager went out with a book and sucked a price out of his thumb! :)
Hilux, Polo - both very easy cars to trade in as they all go for book or above - comes back to demand for a particular model in the end.

Hyundai is trading well, as well - I pushed my luck asking for R 180 000 on an iX35 last week, and they gave me R 185 000! Happy customer! :D
 
There is nothing wrong with FIAT or any other car for that matter based on the concern expressed by the OP.

The car in question in being traded in way to early and was bought with way too much debt.
 
I'd posted this before - but here goes - a quick search found the original posting.

I had a Palio HL. The fuel injection broke on the 22'nd of December and they needed to order one from Italy, the car was in the shop for a month. And then they had to replace the fuse board, seems its made in two parts, and they lose connection over time - I'd drive over a speed bump and have the headlights die on me.
The last straw was when the thrust bearing wore out. The car was screaming like a banshee.

I later found out all three were common problems with the model.
