Unfortunately the high paid big boys are the decision makers so they wouldn't approve anything that would replace them
 
You cant replace a programmer with a machine, yet.
 
New research by McKinsey revealed that 45% of work activities could be automated using existing technology.

“If the technologies that process and understand natural language were to reach the medianlevel of human performance, an additional 13% of work activities could be automated,” the company said.

So 45% of jobs can be replaced immediately by a robot \ computer with a lower than average understanding of natural language while another 13% can be replaced if an average level of understanding is achieved.

Don't get me wrong, certain things can be automated and we are moving in that direction. Some IDEs have modules such as Lightswitch in Visual Studio, that allow you to translate business logic into code, with minimal coding effort.

The problem is that requirements gathering and translation into an actual system is still a human process, and most likely always will be. Someone has an idea, that idea needs to be translated to software, integrating with many different systems and interfaces along the way - things like this are very difficult to automate...

You will notice that my first reply was to the person who said "programmers". My understanding of a program is someone who translate a spec/requirement into code, with someone else doing the design. Like I give you an engineering drawing and ask you to build it.

Programmers can also handle everything from spec writing to design to development, so its not fixed in that sense.Programmers will be the last ones to be replaced, Skynet just needs us around for now...
