My VOIP hosted PBX provider has quoted R560+VAT to record a 60 word announcement and to program it to run for a few days while we're on an expo and won't be able to answer our phones.

Does this charge sound reasonable to you?

no no no... forward your voip at no extra charge (to you) to a prepaid sim wielding cellular phone plugged into a charger taking messages.

EDIT : And get someone with husky, oozing auditory pheromones to sommer pitch at the same time. ; )

It's expensive, but that seems to be the norm. Also depends on the quality of the recording. If done in studio by a professional voice artist/announcer then the price seems standard.

My hosted voip do not charge at all for that. Is part of the service. Every ext has voicemail. Also you can easily forward to an external number (at a cost, as is consdered making an outgoing call).
The IVR (auto attendant message) for the main number is also 'standard' and i can change it any time as i pleased. No need to call the technician.
