people here complain about paying a little under three hundred rand a year for an sabc tv licence, yet fork out R450 per month for DSTV.

At least paying for DSTV you get value. IMO, the service offered by SABC isn't even worth the R300.
FYI, I NEVER EVER EVER EVER watch SABC or listen to ANY SABC radio stations. None!!!!!!! I am sure that I am not the only person like this. The reason is pretty simple, the quality isn't good enough.
If SABC want to charge, let them charge, but only the users who watch TV. Why should I pay a tax on owning a TV, which in no way whatsoever impacts on anyone elses life. At least with a car license, your having a car has an impact in that you contribute to road wear and tear etc...
As I stated earlier, if the system is totally liberalised, even R300 a year would probably seem expensive many operators would choose to offer free TV and generate their revenue from advertising.

Plain fact: the majority of people watching dstv have a tv licence (surely it is a requirement.) The rest don't - one they can't afford dstv (much as they would like it) - and punitive costs throughout our economy make paying a tv licence just an extra burden.

Quite simple, when I was at my parents place, they had DSTV, and occasionally I would switch past SABC, and was always unimpressed.
In general, none. I would listen to FMR in CT if the signal quality were better, or Classic FM if I had DSTV.
If I had cheaper broadband access rates, I would use IP radio.
