Do we pay more for tech in SA?

The importers are full of it. I'm not even going to bother reading the article. A friend of mine recently had a family member bring over Geforce 680 and it set him back something like R3500, significantly less than any locally available price at the time and probably still.

JD Group added that when it comes to pricing tech in SA, duties, freight and other applicable taxes are also taken into account.

Through aligning with “strategic suppliers” and buying in large volumes, however, it is able to remain competitive on pricing.

“We conduct competitive shop-outs (where we do competitor pricing analysis) and we keep the customer at the centre of everything of we do,” the group added.

JD Group said that import taxes and duties are important for the development and growth of the economy and, if applied correctly, could help stimulate local industry.

“Having said this, it is very important that the consumer is able to purchase a product at the best possible price in the market, taking into account international pricing trends,” JD Group said.

Incredible Deception trying to justify their rip off prices, the problem is that the majority of their customers are your everyday sheeple that don't know any better and don't even realise that they're getting screwed

The difference in pricing is astronomical but it's been worn to death. Suppliers have to bear a lot of underlying cost on top of the purchase amount of the units. Then they must still markup. So there isn't much to do, we just live in the arse end of the technological universe.

They are full of lies. We are also an importer for our product in our segment of the market and our margins are nothing compared to the mark up that the greedy fools put on their items.

“Because South Africa is often grouped under European territories, when it comes to tech products, it is important to look at prices in Europe when making comparisons, and not the US, as they are very different markets,” the group said.

Nice way to justify the crazy prices. The products are the same and made in the same place.

Since school 50 years ago South Africans have been taught to make available a product or service and ensure that you add at least 400% profit to it. This is still the business principal for South Africa today, however, in some cases businesses targeting 1000% profit margins and more.

Business in western and eastern countries work different. They are more out to find quantities in terms of buyers and will lower their profit margins. These countries will rather sell a Galaxy S3 at $530 (R4400) to millions of clients, rather than South Africa asking R8000 for the same device, despite the number of clients they sell it to.

On the other hand, South Africa can not be compared to countries like the US or even the European continent. Buying power in South Africa is a mess. Not even 20% of this country contributes towards the economy in terms of buying. This is the main reason why any tech product, or even vehicles are so much more expensive here than abroad. They need to make profits and can't sell to masses like abroad, so they will take as much as they can here.

Pretty much. Most people who walk into the shop have more money than actual brains and pay the rediculuous prices. Only time I ever go in there is to see if some of the dim witted staff have marked down games because they don't know better.
