Why can't you just say husband/wife/boyfriend/girlfriend/partner/lover/whatever-else-they-may-be?

Are you and your partner so insecure in your relationship that you need to make each other feel significant by literally adding the word "significant" to your titles?

Although it's not nearly as bad as "my other half". But I'd rather not get started on that one.

"Significant Other" is useful is cases where you would not like to emphasise the status of the relationship. It is useful as a generic term.

Not quite sure why it bothers you so much

Because not everyone is heterosexual. So So is a generic term that encompasses everything.

Yes, I also hate the phrase. It's probably the most pretentious combination of words in the English language. Just say what you mean, who cares if you're hetero/homosexual/whatever?

Looks like you guys don't get it. Let's
Let's say a guy gets into an accident. Police could ask him 'what's your wives number?' problem with that is of he is gay he may get offended. Hence we say 'can we call your significant other'.

Actually it helps in any situation were assuming someone's sexuality could be a bad thing.

Significant other also stops us from having a form field that's 3 lines long listing husband, wife, boyfriend, girlfriend or anything else. Now your form field can have 1 name. Significant other.

How to keep abzo out of a thread: Use the term SO everywhere...in title, after every second full stop, after every comma, (SO) after every verb and at least 50 times within the body. :D

SO

Are you just jealous because you don't have someone to call any of the above? :D

I use it on line (SO) but I don't think I have ever used the phrase in conversation...

"Where's your bitch?"
"Where's your d00s of a boyfriend?"
Both phrases I think you would catch me using in conversation before asking, "Where's your significant other.".

Actually, I may start using it like this, "Where's your significunt other?".

I dislike the terms SO/Other half/better half etc.
