Ordered ADSL last Thursday as I was moving into a new place in a couple of weeks, they tell me 3 weeks of 'testing' before I'll get a call for install date - no surprises there. I get a call Monday (that's a mere 4 days incl. w/e!), saying they're ready, and ask when can they come around!

Was stunned - found my voice again and had to ask them to wait a bit until next Monday as I hadn't actually moved into my new place yet. Hope my excitement hasn't been a little premature, telkom has been known to dissapoint.

You can only stop the clock once they are actually on the premises and they have your line working. Telkom's word means squat! Having said that - I hope they do come around next Monday...

The testing is quick from what I experienced multiple times as well. The problem is getting them to your place with their silly laptops so that you can pay them R404 :P Good luck!

dude. same happend to me. they called a day after the order was placed, made appointment for 4 days later to install it. after that date it took about 2 months to get the actual line working. dont count your chickens before they hatched... like you say "they have been known to disappoint"

Now you HAD to go blow the wind outta my sails didn't ya :p

Ha! No, not really. Can one ever truly say the ADSL in SA is working 'fine'?

PS. On iBurst at work as Telkom screwed us around way too much when we requested ADSL.

well compared to how "constant" any other connection work, yes you can. adsl really not bad compared to similar products (3g, edge, hsdpa).

Let it be known of course, that you're talking RELATIVE to SA's options of course. Then yes, in full agreement :D

yep defnitaly. the only thing according to me more reliable than adsl is diginet. but then price more than doubles so defeats the point again. but amongst the blind, the one eyed man is king!!

Nope ic, they're installing the phone line too though. What exactly needs to be installed though? I've set up adsl before a number of times when I was in new zealand - and there ain't nothing tricky about it.

Sweet, thanks for clearing that up - probably won't even have the modem by then anyway ...so nothing they can do about it! I'm so cunning :D

I had a phone line installed in my place last Tuesday. I ordered ADSL on the same day as it was installed. I got a phonecall this morning from a contracted Telkom technician and was asked to be available at the premises as they wanted to ensure my ADSL was all set up and working. I drove through to PTA and the techie came in. I was really shocked that something could be happening this fast. He got there and found out that Telkom haven't yet allocated a port for me at the exchange - he said he would have done it himself but as a contractor he isn't allowed to 'mess' with their infrastructure. Oh well, all that hype for nothing :(.

So as it turns out, I am officially a believer! A contracter came in to install my line on Monday at 9.30am as promised. It all works perfectly :D

This has been a true story.

okay so i saw your comment yesterday. i finally managed to get back on my chair now... you should call ripley's maby they can give you a "special edition" show.

i'm really glad for you, you are one of the lucky few!! hehe

Well, I guess it helps staying in an inner city suburb of Cape Town - being a more popular zone, they assign more techies :)
