I used too.
Got a written warning for it (even though, technically, they couldn't prove a thing)
But I accepted it because I thought it was okay (It was done for yonks by other staff)
Things changed 'apparently' and I got nailed (used as an example)
But no ya... I work in a bloody creche so it didn't surprise me.
i used to when i worked for my previous company i had a 2mbit diginet used to download a couple of gigs a day. they didnt care and currently at my present company i dont need to download we have a download tribunal going, each person is allocated to download something and we have a huge storage for the stuff.
I work for a huge multi-national with a massive internet pipe, with torrent completely blocked. I however found a sneaky way around it and thought I would get up-to-date on a few things at night. Needless to say the network admins in the US spotted it within a few minutes and sent me a warning. I now do all my torrent downloading at home.
I do use the office connection for legit things such as large game patches and the like.
I wouldnt do it. One of the functions I do in my job is maintaining many firewall/gateway/proxy servers for large and small companies. One of the requirements those companies almost always ask for is full bandwidth reports to catch abusive employees.
I even dealt with such a case today, when one company phoned me asking why they couldnt connect to the internet, and a quick check up confirmed that a torrent had being started on Friday at 10:49am by XYZ IP on the network and by the Sunday the bandwidth was used up.
