Do you earn less than a Silicon Valley intern

Don't worry about what happens in Silicon valley and Vodacom... worry about what is happening in India.

My Boss was talking about hiring senior DBA's over there for $20 000 a year !
Similar skills cost about $20 000 a month over here....

We all need to watch out or we will be heavily undercut.

I've seen whole departments gradually move from SV to India within my old company. No one was fired, rather gradual attrition in SV, led to replacements in India. It is disconcerting, but I have hardly ever seen India become the center of innovation within a company - possibly partly because all the best Indian engineers want to (and do) move to the US (or elsewhere).

BTW There are many vacancies available in SV and elsewhere for good developers; personally I done enough time as an expatriate: 20 years spread between Atlanta, SV, London and Paris.

I think its worrying for the junior guys wanting to cut their teeth. Its now cheaper to hire somone from India with a few years exp then an entry level candidate over here (Never mind the US)

For sure. What I was getting at above is that although a lot of work has moved to India, no one had to be fired, they found other work elsewhere, since there is so much demand, and their contributions were missed - it's just that innovation became less important than maintenance for those particular projects. Also the gist of the OP is that there is more of an uptick in hiring talent then there has been in a long time. Something a little of in the linked article is the reference to "Silicon Valley", several of those companies are actually based elsewhere (Seattle, Chicago, New York) - it would have been more apt to refer to "top tech companies" than "SV".

It really depends on which companies and how well you do of course. At the "hot" companies listed here, the average would be around $250k/year all inclusive (base, bonus, purchase plan, stocks, etc.). If you do really well (Staff Engineer, Principal Engineer, etc. level), up to $500k/year all inclusive. This still isn't the ceiling, but you're looking at 20+ years experience and a long list of achievements for Distinguished Engineer, Fellow, etc. level, which can be $1m+/year - these are literally the best of the best though.

All I can say is: bliksem.

Thanks for your input!

Yip even Apple has been actively recruiting in the last few months for the Swift & LLVM compiler team, Xcode, UIKit, WebKit, ...

Naturally the Swift / LLVM part caught my fancy, but practically I'm far too crusty to want to uplift to SV for this. If anyone's interested let me know I'll pass along the relative twitter handles (keep in mind you need to be good)

Here's a detailed story of the recruitment process in Silicon Valley: http://haseebq.com/farewell-app-academy-hello-airbnb-part-ii/

His background:
Instructor and Director of Product at App Academy

1st Offers
Yelp’s offer was 105K salary with ~17K/yr in equity. Gusto hit around 115K with comparable equity in options, and TripleByte was in the same ballpark.

Now, if you’re outside tech (or the Bay Area), those might sound like knock-down amazing offers. But all of these offers were lower than I was currently making, and they were all for explicitly junior roles.

Still, 105K might sound like a lot of money to be miffed about. But in San Francisco, with the second highest cost of living in the US (behind only Manhattan), the purchasing power of $105K in SF is the same as making about $57K in Austin, Texas.
Cost of living in SF is a challenge.

Final Result:
In total, I received offers from Airbnb, Youtube (Google subsidiary), Uber, Twitch (Amazon subsidiary), Yelp, Stripe, Gusto, and TripleByte. The average value of the final offers was approximately $193,600. The salaries were all approximately the same at $130K. (Only one company offered me a base salary of $125K.)

To be fair the cost of living in Silicon Valley is astronomical. We in SA may not be earning there salaries but we are also at least not paying three thousand dollars a month for a one bedroom flat.

You have to look at the salaries in relation to the cost of living for them to make sense.

You should read the rest of the thread. CoL, doesn't begin to explain it. Stipends and/or corporate housing are usually provided (unless, apparently if you know Droid... then you get nothing).
