I wonder how Akamai settled on 15 Mbps as the requirement for 4K? From what I can find on Google, Netflix HD (1080) streaming require 6-12 Mbps already. Isn't 4K 4 times the content of HD? So you would need a lot more than 15 Mbps, unless they compress it more?

Compression. Netfix says that 720p needs 5Mbit, but youtube just needs around 3Mbps for same resolution.

It means nothing if you have a 40Mb/s VDSL link, but due to congestion you only get an unstable 3Mb/s.

Afrihost/MTN is still proving that fact on an ongoing basis, and even WebAfrica/IS is struggling with the Yosemite update today. It just underscores the fact that the ISPs are following Eskom logic by not keeping enough reserve margin for peak demand.

I predict next week is going to be more of the same, due to the release of iOS 8.1

It doesn't work like that. Remember you can stream 1080 at craptastic quality and it'll take very little mbps. So resolution in itself means nothing here since quality does not necessarily equal resolution.

Haven't crunched the numbers but 15mbps for 4k sounds about right assuming reasonable streaming quality.

Ok, so they will use a lower bitrate? Won't viewing be better on normal HD with higher quality?

Its just got more compression, so will take more powerful devices to watch it, about 2-3x more power required than H.264

Clearly the author of that article never heard about HEVC it was all the rage at the last trade show I went to. Ten times better compression than H264. Just as H264 was the preferred compression for HD HEVC will be the preferred compression for 4K
